How do you cope when YOU'RE not well?

On Tuesday I came down with a very nasty kidney infection and have only just climbed out of bed to get my Mumsnet fix.
Luckily DH was able to take time off work to look after DS, but what has worried me is what if he wasn't able to do this.
We have no family around us and I am now terrified of being ill again as DH really cannot afford to take anymore time off work (he's self employed)
When you decide to have a baby they forget to tell you that Mummy's can't get sick.

I know the feeling Hope you're feeling better soon.

I had to go and stay with my parents for a week when DS1 was 15 months old and I was newly pregnant with DS2 because I locked my back up completely. I've lost count of the times I've had to battle through stomach bugs and fluey colds to take DSs to school etc. DH cna take a day off to "work from home" just because he's tired and hungover.

This is a really difficult one. DP and I both came down with a really nasty vomiting bug at the same time that was thankfully only 24hrs. We have no family nearby either and had to take it in turns literally holding the baby whilst the other one went off to vomit.

Not very nice at all.

Any sympathetic neighbours/Good Samaritans nearby??

We have no family close by either but I'm sure if we were really desperate someone would drive down and help out.

I had to go into hospital due to illness when ds was 7 months old. I had been ill at home for 8 days and dh did not realise just how ill I was He still went to work leaving me to cope alone. How he grovelled when I ended up in hospital on a drip

codswallop · 22/07/2004 16:12

Northerner · 22/07/2004 16:12

BUT when he has a cold he has to go upstairs for a 'lie down' I swear my dh can not entert our bedroom without lying down on our bed a nd picking up a golf mag.

I think if the worst happens and you are ill and cannot get help from anyone you just have to only do the very very essential things, as long as everyone has something to eat life will go on. When I was ill and had no choice hubby would do the food shopping and the children watched a lot of TV, for a little while the TV can be your best friend. I always try to keep a stock of nappies, wipes, look roll and food that can be made in an instant for these such disasters. I had a gastro thing earlier on in the year which was quite nasty and things werent right for 11 days if you no what I mean, by the end of it I was so dehydrated and knackered. Even picking up ds from nursery was an experience, I was terrified Id need the loo and not be able to stop myself, luckily it didnt happen. As it turned out we had some nice afternoons lying in bed watching videos we hadnt watched for ages.

Northerner · 22/07/2004 16:13

At the beginning of April this year I got ill with a viral infection. I had been run down for about a month and this thing just got a stranglehold on me. Dh was working away at the other end of the country at the time. At first I did the usual "I'll just soldier on, just do a bit less than usual" - until I realised that I didn't even have the strength to lift myself up to a sitting position. I had to admit defeat and call dh to come home 2 weeks early . I felt like such a failure, but I was so weak I couldn't even walk or brush dds hair. Dh even had to carry me to the loo for a couple of days!!

bootsmonkey · 22/07/2004 16:30

Blimey - if DH carried me to the loo he'd be laid up, flat on his back for weeks!

Miaou · 22/07/2004 16:38

Fortunately I only weigh about a third as much as he does!!!!
