have just bathed my female pup(aged 6 months) and noticed her privates are all swollen.her fanjo(sorry don't know what else to call it!!)is about 3 times its normal size and shes yelping when i touch the area, even her tummy.
i can only imagine it to be something like a hernia or prolapse iykwim?can anyone shed any light on this?just thought i'd ask advice on MN before dashing to the phone and calling the vets.

Sounds like shes on heat.
My 11 month old is going through it atm

ash6605 · 17/04/2007 14:39

does it make their fan swell??didn't know that!
she also has a terrible fishy smell about her atm.do they feel unwell during a heat? cause she's not off her food but is feeling really sorry for herself and wandering the house.
no blood though.

They do smell a bit when they're on heat.

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:45

Yeah it makes it all swollen and a bit red. Ours has only had little drib drabs of blood.

ash6605 · 17/04/2007 15:06

i dont want to worry you but if your dog is not better you should take her to the vets, it does sound like she could be in heat but im surprised about the tenderness (especially in her tummy) and smell. She is a bit young but the possibility of a pyometera (spelling) which is a womb infection that can be life threatening if left untreated. It is probably that she is just in heat as this tends to present in older dogs but not impossible in a little one, is there any pus in the area at all? If so, vets now im afraid. I am speaking from experience as i am an ex vet nurse so just to be on the safe side give your vet a call, they may be able to advise on phone simply to put your mind at rest.

lucyellensmum · 17/04/2007 15:22

didnt see the booby message, she is probably on heat but keep an eye on her and if she is still unwell then do give your vet a call. And make sure you keep the back gate shut!

ash6605 · 17/04/2007 15:31

thanks,i'll see how she is tommorrow and call them if i'm still worried. i'm going to have to be extra vigilant with her as there has been a stray dog hanging about lately, our fence/gate is secure but you never know! our male dog is neutered and i'm going to talk to the vt at her 6 month check about having her done too.my hubby says 1 bitch in heat(ie-ME) is enough for him to cope with!

TBH, i wouldnt wait, it wont hurt to give them a call, i'm SURE she is OK as she sounds more like she is in heat but if its a pyo (basically the womb fills with pus) then it needs to be sorted asap, she will need to be spayed to remove the womb and infection, the longer it is left the riskier the anaesthetic. You should be looking out for her appearing excessively uncomfortable and lethargic, going off her food (not always) and a smelly discharge around the vagina. As i say, it sounds like shes in heat (i know i suffer when i am but better safe than sorry and then you can come back and say i was wrong which i am sure by the way i am.

lucyellensmum · 17/04/2007 18:47

hows it going with your hormonal bitch ?

ash6605 · 17/04/2007 20:32

i rang them and they said it is likely to be her first heat just to keep my eye on her incase she goes off her food or seems otherwise unwell. she is fine apart from the fact she is trying to shag the dog.

thats good news, sorry to be a worry wort but just seen lots of dogs with pyo and the symptoms are very similar, i think the nipples were the give away though!
