This more for people who had a big white dress. I know in the long run its not terribly important really but I am interested in some things so...

What did it look like? Picture?
Was it was you expected to chose?
How did you know it was 'the one'?
On your day did you feel perfect in it, do you think it was the right choice?
Did you feel uncomfortable in it during the day, eg if it was laced up did you feel restricted?
If it had beading on the bodice did it rub on your arms?
If it had a big train was that a pain to walk around with? Did you bustle it up in the evening - did it stay?
Did it feel very heavy?
Did you wear a veil? When did you take it off?

Cream Thai silk, long sleeves (which tapered to a v), squared-off v-neck with beading in cream and pale gold round the neckline, full-ish skirt with a long-ish train, buttons up the sleeves and down the back (real silk-covered buttons, not ones over a zip).

I designed it and had it made for me (I know a brilliant dressmaker!), so that's how I knew it was the one.

Yes, felt amazing in it - it was the most amazing dress I've ever worn and I had masses of compliments about it - it wasn't uncomfortable at all, just light, beautiful and floaty. Fabric was beautiful too - bit of a sheen, seemed to glow.

I had it bustled up for the evening and it looked just as fab as down and was all swirly and beautiful. Great to dance in. Yes, it stayed - had ribbons sewn under the skirt.

I wore a veil that I took off after the wedding breakfast.

Mine was ivory, not big in the meringue sense but had a puddle train that hitched up. I didn't pick it out, the shop assistant did and she was very good at her job because what I picked didn't suit me and this one was perfect when I tried it on. I'm not one for going round dozens of shops and got it in my lunch hour but it was as near as dammit to what I had in mind and I didn't have a lot of time to look around much.
I never felt uncomfortable, I loved it. I looked like a princess. I had no veil but wore flowers in my hair.

One thing I would say is never change out of it into a 'going away' suit. You only wear it once (usually) so make the most of it. Once you are out of the big frock you don't feel like a bride anymore. I did that at my first wedding and then just felt like one of the guests so keep it on, dance the night away and enjoy your day as it will fly past

Pictures at theperfectportraitco dot com.
*I had been lookin for 6months to a year beforehand, but only in magazines.
*felt very girly (for a change) in mine.
*I did feel a little uncomfy during meal, it had bones in the front and they kinda dug in a bit.
*Had beading going from front to back, didn't rub at all, thought it would though.
*Mine didn't have a big train, my sis made a 'loop & hook' type thing so it stayed up, but not when i was going mad on dance floor
*Not heavy at all.
*I chose not to wear aveil, i tried some on, they did look nice but it kept going in my face and i hate that, so just had a tiara with my hair kinda up.
But it helped that my sister works in a bridal shop so she helped me a great deal.

Cod!

Honestly I don't know many people who are married and I am into over thinking things so mumsnet is a good wedding source for me!

Ivory, cannot remember what material, non shiny , heavy, very plain, princess line, train, which was hooked up on the back of the dress for the dancing, waist length ivory veil which i kept on for the duration! it was comfortable, easy to move in, not too hot , considering we got married in June !! stayed bustled up, but that made it feel heavier,so ended up keeping it looped over my arm, felt like a princess, and loved it

was very plain, i tried on some big meringues, but they did not suit, but glad i did, as wedding gowns are not the sort of thing you can just go and try on for fun !

kept it on until we got to the hotel we were staying at for our wedding night, was actually lovely to walk in with it on, everyone smiles and gushes over you which helps prolong the specialness of the day !

Imawurzel · 15/04/2007 18:27

And i broke it in the evening
It had an organza covering and when i was walking up the steps it caught on my shoe and made a hole, but tis all ok cos my wonderful sis mended it.

Oh and it was a strapless one by maggie sotterro. With a lace up back.
Cant remember name.

Smurfgirl · 15/04/2007 18:28

I love Maggie Sottero dresses, love love love them!

Bargain too. £650!!!
Well, i think it was a bargain.
Definately would not pay over £1000.

MrsBadger · 15/04/2007 18:40

picture here

Had been expecting the corsetty strapless type but they made my shoulders look weirdly deformed. Tried on one that shape by chance - skirt was ghastly but neckline was spot on so narrowed the search.

Went into a shop to try on one I had seen on their website that had the right neckline but it turned out the detail on it was horrid. I said 'have you any more that shape?' and they fetched this one off the sale rail.
Took me 24h and consulting mum, sis, grandma and all my work collegaues to make the decisison.

Absolutely perfect for they day, would choose same one again.

Not uncomfortable so's I'd notice during the day, but I had to take off the petticoat to go to the loo, and once I'd unzipped it at the hotel I couldn't get it back on again and had to go down to the bar for the afterparty in my jeans.
No beading.

Train was fine during the day (but wasn't v big, as you can see) and we were in a place with lots of room.
Hoiked it up for evening with a button underneath - got it wrong the first time and it came down after 10min but the second time it stayed up for the rest of the night.

Not heavy at all (critically the petticoat was seperate so the dress hung off my chest and the petticoat off my waist thus distributing the load )

No veil.

Imawurzel · 15/04/2007 18:41

Oh, if you go on theperfectportraitco dot com go to all weddings (i think) find 15/07/06 Jon & Deanne.
You can see all my pics.

ShowOfHands · 15/04/2007 18:45

Dress is on my profile. Wasn't at all what I planned on having, but was recommended by the shop lady and she was right. Was very comfortable and would never have tried it on if left to my own devices. It was bustled up in the evening, stayed there, had a ceilidh and danced all night. No heaviness, took the veil off before I started dancing and it didn't rub at all.

wheelybug · 15/04/2007 18:47

Was ivory bodice and straight skirt with train, buttons all the way down the back. Skirt was matt satin and top was jacquered satin (i think).

I tried it on in shop and then was able to have it bought in unmade and have some bits redone - I think the one I tried on had ties down the back and I had the buttons put in instead. It wasn't at all what I expected - I thought I'd have a chiffony floaty number but my SIL to be picked it out and as soon as I tried it on I knew it was the one !

Defo felt right choice - didn't feel uncomfortable although it had slightly off the shoulder straps and they slipped a bit (don't remember it being a problem at the time but in some photos doesn't look as good as it could have !).

Had veil (my Mum's !) but took it off as soon as in the car. My train unbuttoned so I took it off at some point (can't remember if before the meal or before dancing).

shonaspurtle · 15/04/2007 19:01
  • Ivory Thai silk, very plain, strapless, corset back, A line with a medium length train.
  • It was pretty much what I thought I'd have as I'm not a very frilly person.
  • I knew it was the one because trying it one was the first time out of a day of dress shopping that I actually felt beautiful. My mum & I had been coming to the conclusion that I might be the only woman in the world that didn't really suit wedding dresses...
  • It was perfect on the day, light as a feather and easy to wear. Bustle held through a night of ceilidh dancing no probs.
  • Wore a full length veil with pearl beading which I took off for the meal.
Smurfgirl · 15/04/2007 19:02

always nice to have an excuse to look back through the pictures
The pearls were my grandma's and my 'something old'

Smurfgirl · 15/04/2007 19:09

My pearls were my nanas, my mum says they are too old fashioned but I am only young so I think I can carry it off and well, they were my nana's!

Simple rounded bodice style ivory satin with thick straps at the front going to three thin straps at the back. Fullish skirt to the dress with small train. Had crystal type beading to back straps and round bodice. Like frost. (Winter wedding, had a red cloak too)
Yes what I expected to choose thought I tried all sorts on and was very pleasantly surprised by some and hated some others I thought I would love. They look VERY different off the hanger. It was fun trying on.
Knew it was the one as it was the only one I really really really liked. No epiphany or anything, it was just very me. (Oddly it was also the cheapest dress I tried on , I am NOT cheap btw
Yes it was great on the day, I felt fabulous but I prefered my amazing cloak which was made for me from the most amazing type of velvet that changed shade as it moved. So beautiful. So yes right choice.
No didn't feel uncomfortable on the day at all.
Beading rubbed and scratched under my arms to bits! I didn't notice at all on the day though as I was so high on adrenaline and then alcohol etc. I was gobsmacked to see how sore it was the next day.
No big train but enough to be bustled up and it didn't stay and that ws a TOTAL pain in the arse as I was dancing. Lots of people trod on it and I ended up holding it for a lot of the time before someone got busy with a needle and thread.
No not heavy.
No veil as had intended to wear hood of cloak up for church entrance a la Scottish Widows lady, but didn't do that either in the end.
I loved the whole outfit and my DH said Wow quite audibly when I walked in the church .

cece · 15/04/2007 19:14

I thought it looked good in the picture. Silk crepe to chene with silk chiffon with little embroidered pattern ion it (this was just the bodie and sleeves. Sort of cross between empire line and princess line. It was very comfy, bo rubbing but had no beading on it.

I had it made by a dress maker but she followed my instructions.

It has longer bit to the skirt at back which trailed on the floor but not too much. No I did not hook it up as there was no facility to do so plus didn't feel the need.

No viel but kept tiara on all evening. Took it all off at bedtime.

MrsBadger · 15/04/2007 19:14

They are not old-fashioned, they are classic.
One of the things I really like about my dress is that it's kind of timeless fashion-wise - that silhouette shot of DH and I walking away through the arch could have been any time from about 1830 to the present day.

Mum2FunkyDude · 15/04/2007 19:17

Mine was Gothic inspired with bell sleeves and sequined bodice in a golden colour and a velvet burgundy cape. I spend a bit of money (£600 7 years ago) had it designed and made by the same guy.

munz · 15/04/2007 19:18

Imawurzel · 15/04/2007 19:19

SMURFGIRL They changed the name shortly after i got it, they added a few things to it.
I will find out from my sis what it was called.
