for me its always from my mother and siblkings and is: "your children are so good .. you are so lucky"

funny that isn't it? if they were being PITAs it would be my fault but because they are behaving well its pure luck

what does it for you?

"Oh lucky you, you don't work on Friday do you? Wow, so it's like Friday for you today!!" Always said enviously on a Thursday as I finish for the week.

I want to shake them and say actually, I work 8am-5.45pm for the other four days JUST so I can do this, you could do it too if you were prepared to put your head above the parapet blah de blah.

Dinosaur · 15/04/2007 09:40

The one that gets me is "Oh, your H is a SAHD - you're so lucky!"

welliemum · 15/04/2007 09:41

Not directed at me, but:

"We know these people, they're [ethnic minority] actually, really lovely people of course..."

Yes, and you are a racist

misdee · 15/04/2007 09:41

oh but he is so much better than he was before

WTF??

Greenleeves · 15/04/2007 09:42

Can't see anything racist about that welliemum

alibobins · 15/04/2007 09:47

You cope so well (in and out of hospital all the time with poorly ds)

welliemum · 15/04/2007 09:48

Greeny, when someone is insisting very loudly that people of a different ethnicity are really nice people, you can be reasonably sure that deep down, they believe the exact opposiite.

edam · 15/04/2007 09:49

Or that the really nice people are nice despite being Black or Asian or whatever. And the rest of 'them' are not so nice.

welliemum · 15/04/2007 09:50

Oh yes, I get the "you cope so well" thing about being disabled and it does my head in. What else am I supposed to do?

ComeOVeneer · 15/04/2007 09:51

WWW I used to get that when I worked 3 days a week. Like the other 2 week days being at home with 2 under 3 was a holiday

puddle · 15/04/2007 09:55

"Gosh you look so tired"

" You are lucky is so good with the kids" erm no married a man who wanted to be involved with OUR children.

I HATE HATE HATE that "you're so lucky" crap about men being sahds/looking after their own children too. I want to rant when people say it.

PippiLangstrump · 15/04/2007 09:57

I get that a lot (about working three days). I've even been asked 'so how do you keep yourself busy on your days off??'
what DAYS OFF????

edam · 15/04/2007 10:00

MIL is generally lovely but she regularly tells me dh is looking tired and doesn't he do a lot for ds... like it's cause and effect and MY fault. She had a live-in helper for the whole of dh's childhood... (aunt who lived with them).

Twiglett · 15/04/2007 12:41

oh edam that would piss me off

OttersPool · 15/04/2007 12:44

someone actually said to me the other day 'i always see you dp aroound town arms full of babies - i suppose with him being a vet he is good with children'

???? WTF?

Lovecat · 15/04/2007 13:02

Otterspool!

Yes, the one about 'he's so good with the kids' really gets my goat - he's such a hero because he changes a damn nappy!!

The one that really got me recently was at a works do, big black-tie dinner, girl in my office of about 20, comes over to me, pats my shoulder like I'm her granny (I'm 40) and says "Aahh! Are you having a nice time, then?"

"Erm... yeah" I reply, nonplussed. Later, when the dancing is in full swing, she jigs past me on the dancefloor and goes "Good for you!"

WTF??? Do I need a new moisturiser or something??

AnnabelCaramel · 15/04/2007 13:04

"you're looking so well"

No, I'm a stone overweight and probably have too much blusher on!

nappyaddict · 15/04/2007 13:09

oooh isn't your baby big/small/tall/short comments do my head in. i quite often get contradictory ones about all of these and it really gets my goat.

also you're lucky he's so good/sleeps/eats so well.

isn't he crawling/standing yet?what do you carry him about all day? no he just likes to sit at the moment. grrr.

singingmum · 15/04/2007 13:29

My Dad said to my Dp:-
"I'm really proud of the way you stood by my daughter.A lot of men would have left her wahst with her weight and health probs."

Am unsure if I should be happy my dad likes my Dp or p'd off that he thinks that most men would have left me.Also think that all the cr*p my brother put us through would be worse

shonaspurtle · 15/04/2007 13:39

"Aw what a lovely baby. Is he good?"

What does this mean? What would make a tiny baby not "good"? It appears to be mainly sleep related but I get the impression that babies who cry a lot too are bad 'uns...[

I was speaking to my mum's neighbour yesterday who was cuddling ds and asked the inevitable. When I confirmed that yes, he was very good she said "all babies seem to be good these days I don't know what you're feeding them". No, I think we actually do just believe that our lovely babies are being themselves and not deliberately trying to wind us up with "bad" behaviour.

becklespeckle · 15/04/2007 13:46

"Doesn't he look like his Dad!" (really, I hadn't noticed...)

joash · 15/04/2007 14:10

"Oh but it's such a shame - you have a lovely looking face" - bloody annoying comment when what people really mean is "God you're so fat!!!"

nappyaddict · 15/04/2007 14:17

one comment i had once when i was pregnant - but why are you keeping it if the dad doesn't want to be involved? erm because i will love my baby unconditonally and although it would be lovely to have him in our lives i feel we will cope great without him and that i am capable of giving my child a great life on my own.
