I'm about to become British

I got a letter from the home office today say that I've been granted British citizenship. Just have to go to a citizenship ceremony and it's a done deal. I'll no longer be a South African. It's quite sad in a way - but good grief, how nice to not have to get visas for everywhere I go.

Hooray.

Congratulations. It's all downhill from here.

Do you get a badge or something? I can't imagine what rubbish the Immigration service have put you through but well done for getting to the end of it still sane.

SherlockLGJ · 05/04/2007 21:18

Just tell me you do not have to swear allegiance to President Tony.

tinkerbellhadpiles · 05/04/2007 21:19

Is he still there? President Gordon isn't it?

DumbledoresGirl · 05/04/2007 21:21

What is this about a citizenship ceremony? Dh didn't have to do anything like that. Oh, light bulb lights in DG's head: is that something newish?

Plibble · 05/04/2007 21:24

Oooh, my SIL is doing that. Apparently the book you have to swot up on is ridiculous. But look on the bright side- no more taxation without representation.

Furball · 05/04/2007 21:25

did you have to answer questions like what it the queens middle name? and other usless trivia

JoshandJamie · 05/04/2007 21:25

I have no idea what the ceremony involves. Probably have to sing God save the Queen etc and wave a flag. I did have to do a 'britishness test' to prove I could speak english and answer questions like: how regularly do British children get pocket money? And which country did Britain recruit most of its bus drivers from after ww2? And other gems.

Did you have to give up your SA passport? Coz I still have both, was born here and spent the best part of my youth in SA, I find it really sad that I now think of myself as more scottish than South African . Where were you in SA and do you get asked if you are Australian - which I always find amusing!

Really glad that you will no longer have to get visas for places!!! Coz it is a pain!!

tinkerbellhadpiles · 05/04/2007 21:32

They probably just give you a passport and say 'you the man, innit' a lot. It'd be nice if you at least got to have your photo taken with a cardboard cutout of the queen.

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 05/04/2007 21:33

JoshandJamie - how often do British children get pocket money?

Mine get it when I remember or haven't been cunning enough to dock it.... so about twice a year!

SquonkyDonkeyHotCrossBuns · 05/04/2007 21:33

(and I have no idea about the bus driver question)

ShoshableEggEater · 05/04/2007 21:37

J&J how long did it take to get our sitazenship DDIL is SA and was trying to find out?

princesscc · 05/04/2007 21:40

I wonder how many Brisish born and bred would get all the questions right! I'd love to have a go, make it your mission tonight ladies - find me the quesionaire!

Oh and J&J - Congrats!

JoshandJamie · 05/04/2007 21:40

Still have no idea how often britsh kids get pocket money - the book said once a week I think. And it was the West Indies apparently that sent over all the bus drivers. So there you go.

SSEggeater - because I'm married to a brit, I had to have lived here for 3 years (and have been married during that time) and then could apply. You first have to take the test. That doesn't take long - you just order the book, study and book an appointment. I then farted around for ages but could have submitted my stuff in immediately, and they claim it takes no more than 5 months for the application to be processed. Mine has taken just longer than that.

Not sure if I'm allowed both passports. Was told that i could but would have to reapply for dual citizenship annually which just seems like a pain in the butt.

JoshandJamie · 05/04/2007 21:43

oh - and tinkerbell (firstly, hope your piles are getting better - darn uncomfy) but yes, I do hope that I get a pic taken with a cardboard cut out of the queen.
