Mine's just gone "kaput" and I'm thinking about not replacing it.

I think you could probably survive. Do yu use it every day?

We haven't had a cooker for about 3 years!!!!

CadburyCremeSquonk · 03/04/2007 18:22

Mine went kaput about two years ago and every so often I see a cheap one in Asda or somewhere and I think about replacing it. Then I think about what I would do in it after so long without one.

It would be nice for re-heating cups of tea that have gone cold as I spent too long on mn.

erm... that's it really

Bellie · 03/04/2007 18:24

Depends what you use it for really. We moved and left our built in microwave at our old house. There wasn't a built in one where we moved to and thought that we would get one at some point after we had moved. That was 8 months ago and we don't miss it at all.

TheArmadillo · 03/04/2007 18:25

I lasted a year or more without one. The only things I use mine for is defrosting stuff or cooking peas.

Its only that dp and lodger made a fuss and we were offered one, that we got another.

What do you use it for? Could you do that another way and therefore not use it?

ComeOVeneer · 03/04/2007 18:25

Depends how much you use it. I use mine a lot, but it is also an oven and as our new house has only one oven/grill rather tahan a double oven I find it handy

theslownorris · 03/04/2007 18:28

TBH I could do with the space on the worktop and I don't really use it that much. Most of our cooking is done from scratch on the hob and in the oven [smug emoticon] .

you've answered your own question then......

you dont need a microwave

i worked for a family who didnt have one...

and anotehr family had builders in, we moved into a flat for 3 months and survivd for 3 months without a microwave.

we also survived 3 months in the summer without other basic kitchen equipment, not even a freezer

we had an oven, with 4 hobs, a kettle a toaster and a TINY fridge, that was it!

CadburyCremeSquonk · 03/04/2007 18:35

I survived for about six months with dp and two children with only a kettle to make hot meals with!

twas not easy and numerous trips to the chippy were made within that time, but we survived.

sheepgomeep · 03/04/2007 18:39

me, dp, and two dc survived 2 months without a cooker when I moved into this house. My microwave and kettle was a godsend

Also survived without a microwave when I lived with xp. It can be done...

noddyholder · 03/04/2007 18:41

I don't have one We bought one when we were renovating as no kitchen but tbh it never got used I hate the whole idea of them

hippipotami · 03/04/2007 19:31

We have not had a microwave for about 4 years now and really don't need it. We used it for heating baby milk (shoot me ), and for sterilising baby bottles. We don't eat microwave ready meals etc, so I can honestly say we have never ever missed it.

(and the space it took up on the worktop is now taken by a very useful breadmaker!)

FrayedKnot · 03/04/2007 19:37

Nah, we did without for months, and even now we ahve a new one, I only seem to use it for cooking brocolli.

Mine gets used loads due to teenagers in the house. They are always making hot chocolate drinks and microwave popcorn. I also start off baked tatties in it an cook all my veg in it.

obimomkanobi · 03/04/2007 21:07

We only ever used ours for warming baby food/milk!

My mother bought it for us a few years ago. For 355 days of the year it lives in a cupboard.

For 10 days of the year when my mum visits it graces the work surface!

TrilbyOFerrall · 03/04/2007 21:20

Ours is used every day for;
heating up wheat warm-pad thingies
heating milk for hot chocolate
de-frosting food that I forgot to take out of the freezer in the morning
de-frosting/re-heating soup
boiling water for tea/coffee on the mornings when it is so cold that the calor gas bottle has frozen (we're not on the mains)

It depends what you use it for. I have done without one for years at a time, but we do seem to use it a lot when we have one, especially in winter when the gas freezes.

fannyannie · 03/04/2007 21:22

depends on if either you or DH is ever going to work 'odd' hours and need their dinner warming up when they get home - Dh doesn't get home until gone 9.30pm - by which time his dinner is stone cold......so it goes in the microwave .

Also love making milky hot chocolates in it rather than having to warm milk on the hob.

And Trilby you don't have one of those awful wheatbag things do you - they STINK!!!!!
