Our school has a form to fill in.

You will probably not be authorised to take her out of school and so you might get fined. (You can take her, but you may well have to pay the fine. Plenty of parents at my DCs school do this and I presume they just pay.)

yes they gave me the form but they also told me to do a letter to explain it is the first time we are going on holyday in term time.she never miss school.in his class last year a child missing almost a month for things of religion or something like that I do not understand because other children give permission and others do not

Is December the only time your DH and you can get off work? If not then there is October half term coming up, if time is an issue with your FIL's illness.

If so then just a simple letter along the lines of, we are requesting a term time absence due to my FIL's ill health and wish to visit him as a family and explain why this could not be done during term time.

I would just write,

XXX will be absent from xdate to ydate, we are visiting their grandfather who lives abroad and is very unwell. Regards, aura88

If they are going to fine you, they will fine you, if the head has any compassion, and is given any leeway, they will not.

We thought that in December it is better to go because they have two weeks of holiday and if they would leave us another week they would be perfect the tickets are very expensive and for this we thought of going 3 weeks so we got cheaper tickets

Then don't sell it as we have to go to see a dying grandad, just say "XXX will be absent from xdate to ydate" - it is essentially a holiday with family from overseas.

Or... just go for 2 weeks
