now that when you separate and need to make a claim for income support they do it all over the phone and then ring you back i am waiting for my call back from them, when i made my first point of contact with them they asked abpout child tax credit, i said i havent informed them yet they said when thye phone back to do CSA interest they will also do tax credits for me.

What on earth is CSa "interest"? I was going to opt out on basis of domestic violence

Not sure I'm answering this correctly but here goes - they will ask if you want to claim 'maintenence' and if you say yes the claim will be passed onto the CSA. Once there it could remain gathering dust for years or they will actually try and get it worked out.
If you say no to a claim for maintenence you need to give a good reason why eg. violence. You may get a home visit interogating erm.. i mean asking you a few questions about it. they need to be saitisfied that the violence aspect is real and would cause trouble for you should they go ahead and try to claim on your behalf.

Once they are satisfied it's genuine they don't try and claim money from the absent one - but your money is not affected at all.
