Seen my first wasp today, and I'm scared stiff of them

How do I get over my fear of wasps, bees or any other sort of flying insect. I don't like flying insects, incase they are a wasp iyswim.

I know where my fear came from, i belive it was due to other family members being scared, but how can I get over it so my dc don't have the same fear.

TBH, if I see one, I run in the other direction. I didn't go into my house last summer as there were two wasps outside the house.

Help needed

I really sympathise. I have the same fear. It really spoils my summers as i'm always on wasp alert. My dd's are now at the age where they will copy me and I don't want that. And spiders, well thats another story.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/03/2007 21:37

Would it help to have one of those insect spray can things? Or can you not get close enough to use it? I will happily come and kill any for you. I make it a rule never to let a wasp escape from my house alive.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/03/2007 21:38

Oh and the ones you are seeing at this time of year are probably the queens, so kill one of them and you are obliterating thousands of normal wasps.

bunnypeculiar · 28/03/2007 21:39

If you find an answer, tell me! I spend half the summer ducking in case that buzzing thing is a wasp.
It's totally irrational - I've been stung and it wasn't that bad...

I've got much, much better since having the dcs - I can now force myself to KILL the b*ggers so they don't hurt my babies

Now ... hornets...

expatinscotland · 28/03/2007 21:41

I don't worry about them stinging me, but the girls.

Interesting that you post this because dd is rapidly developing a wasp/bee phobia. She doesn't want to go into the garden because of wasps, and was in pieces yesterday when a wasp was in the house.

She also asks me repeatedly about the 3 times I've been stung in my life.

Don't quite know what to do about it, or how to respond, so shall watch this thread with interest.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2007 21:42

My DD1's the same way.

hollyandtheeasterbunny · 28/03/2007 22:22

OMG I thought I was the only one! It is awful! I go into panic mode every time I see one or hear a buzzing. If there is one in the house I can't go in. I never open windows and never leave outside doors open. Even a picture of one makes me retch. I saw one today and was nearly sick. It really ruins my summer as I can't eat outside or even sit in the garden without being on full alert mode. I think I need help!

redclover79 · 28/03/2007 22:40

can't offer any advice, not a big fan of wasps, but I am phobic about ladybirds!!

jofeb04 · 29/03/2007 09:23

At least I know I'm not the only one

Holly, I am like you. I can't sit outside relaxing as I am watching out for wasps, any buzzing sound I am up and out of the chair lol

I can't kill wasps either as I can't get close enough to them!! That's what my dp is for! I'm a bit of a hippy when it comes to animals, I never kill spiders or even put them outside! I am rather fond of them and would much prefer to have spiders in my house than flies! Wasps, however, are a different story! They are evil and need to be destroyed!
