i have probs with shampoo. it makes my hair tangle, brittle, dry and have found only 1 shampoo that is ok but is hard to get hold of and is expensive.

i want to stop using shampoo so tried using less and less but the top of my head was clean and underneath was manky.

i'm thinking of going cold turkey, but how long does it take before your hair looks decent again?

would you recommend doing it?

I've done it!!!

I've got curly hair and my equally curly-haired cousin recommended a US book by a woman who recommended that you stop using shampoo and just use conditioner. I haven't shampooed my hair for about 8 months now and it looks absolutely fine. The book is called "Curly Girl" and its by Lorraine Massey.
You do have to use conditioner instead and regularly rub your head (rather than just the hair) with the conditioner to keep everything nice and clean. It took about 10-14 days (I think) before it stopped itching and started looking really healthy.
The book also talks about what products to look out for in a conditioner and styling treatments, which are beneficial to dry hair.

Hope that's useful.....

Doh! didn't mean to hit post!

I have just started using soapnuts for my laundry and am considering making soapnut shampoo. Will let you know how I get on.
