BOOKSTART - DID YOU KNOW??????? (free stuff!!!!!!!!!)

I have been surprised at how many of my friends didn't know about the Bookstart scheme so thought i'd start a thread to make sure you all know about it too!

From the leaflet I was given at the library today -

"There are 3 wonderful Bookstart packs available for your child, each containing 2 super books and other things:

Bookstart bag should be given to you by the Health Visitor by the time your baby is 1

Bookstart + bag should be given by your Health Visiting team when your child is between 2 and 2.6

My Bookstart Treasure Box will be given by the playgroup, nursery or childminder the term after the 3rd birthday"

now, in my area (suffolk), this doesn't always happen, the 2 yr check with the HV is done over the phone so they don't give you the pack, and if your child doesn't go to nursery at 3 they don't end up with that pack either. my ds does go to nursery but his was never sent to them, seems a bit hit-and-miss.

You can however go into your local Library with your dc's red book and ask for any of them at the correct time. We collected packs 2 & 3 from the library when he was 2 and then today. The Library also runs a bookstart trail where your child is rewarded with stickers and certificates for borrowing books from the library.

It might not be much but EVERY child is entitled to it, ds is thrilled with his treasure chest, it has 'Peace at Last' by Jill Murphy, 'You choose' by Nick Sharratt and Pippa Goodhart, some sticky bookplates, crayola colouring pencils, a sharpener, colouring book, and info for parents, all in a sturdy box.

ooh, thanks for that - dd & ds both got their first one ... but didn't know there were MORE - will smile nicely at the library ladies!

hotandbothered · 27/03/2007 15:16

thanks for the info. i was wondering about it but thought I'd just missed out. Do you think i am too late to claim? Dd is 3.5?!

EllieK · 27/03/2007 15:28

my ds is 3.6 and collected his Treasure Chest today so you'll def. be able to get that!

I only got the first one, dd isn't 3 til June so should still get that,. Assume i miss out on the 2nd as the hv didn't do a 2 year check up? Ah well she's got a million books so sure they won't be missed!

Will make sure she gets the 3rd one though, thanks for the info Ellie

EllieK · 27/03/2007 15:47

no, you don't have to miss the 2nd one, we got it from the Library when matthew was about 2.5 i think, if you haven't had it and it's not time for the next one, then you can claim it.

Might try it then, will see if i can summon up the energy tomorrow

hewlettsdaughter · 27/03/2007 16:57

We got the second one from ourlocal library when it was time (no 2-year old check here - hvs too busy!)

MerlinsBeard · 27/03/2007 16:58

you can go into the clinic and ask for your 2 yr pack and the libraries don't always stock them. Also the bookcrawl thing (the stickers) isn't been done all over.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 27/03/2007 16:58

In our area you only get the first one from the HV. You can get the other 2 from the library though.

we got our third one - the treasure box when the nursery teachers came to visit before dd1 started nursery. (the others came via the HV)

Flamesparrow · 27/03/2007 23:10

I didn't get the 2 yr one (or the one yr one for DD but have for DS) - DD loves her "trussure tresht"

shirleymac · 27/03/2007 23:27

That's brilliant - thanks for that. My dd just turned 2 & there's been no mention of a health check so I think I'll take her in tomorrow to the library.

bEllieK · 27/03/2007 23:40

glad to be useful
was surprised just how many people don't get told about it
