Do you wear strong perfume? Because you make my ruddy head ache and I wish you would stop. Everyone else thinks so too but they are too polite to tell you that you stink.

I think that more or less covers it.

Too much is horrible. Seriously headache-inducing and I don't care how 'nice' it smells to the person who's wearing it. The olfactory equivalent of driving round with the windows open playing your choice of music at top volume! And not stinking of perfume doesn't mean you have to smell of BO.... it doesn't have to be one or the other.

scatterbrain · 27/03/2007 12:05

So - I like aromatherapy oild burning in my house - is this also bad and offensive ?

Generally I like a mix of lavender, geranium and ylang-ylang ! Although will fling in a bit of tea-tree or eucalyptus if coldy, or clary sage if PMT looms !!

Should I stop right now for fear of making people vom ? have never noticed any adverse comments so far - nor any vomming visitiors !!

MuminBrum · 27/03/2007 12:05

Dinosaur, that happened to me too - I never liked strong perfumes but while I was pregnant I went right off the whole idea of scents and have not really got back into them. But I did put on some Paloma (yoohoo, Norkmaiden!) for a party the other evening, and enjoyed the whole dressed-up-and-wearing-perfume thing.
I used to wear Aromatics but now can't bear it, you seem to smell it everywhere, and my DP reckons it smells of old ladies "and not in a good way".

Dinosaur · 27/03/2007 12:06

Yes, I agree with you about Aromatics.

The one I most can't stand is Clinique Happy. Blurgh!

expatinscotland · 27/03/2007 12:12

I'm going to smell Angel in about an hour.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 27/03/2007 12:12

When pg, a friend bought me Chanel 'Chance' for my birthday. It smelt quite nice, and I wore it throughout my pregnancy - weird considering how most other smells made me want to barf.
Now I can't wear it at all, and hate the smell of it. Is that hormones in reverse?

WanderingTrolley · 27/03/2007 12:14

Clinique Happy actually hurts my nose.

I smell of cake.

BarbieLovesKen · 27/03/2007 12:16

folks, on a serious note plug-ins are a major cause of house fires!! a huge no no!!

get the little fan one on battarys or something....

OopsImoaningagain · 27/03/2007 12:26

What do you think of Cabotine from Hermes ?? I used to be impopular with this one. Or Jardin de Bagatelle by Guerlain, I love this one but it makes my DH sneezes !!!

Jackaroo · 27/03/2007 12:54

I truly do have a Princess and the Pea sense of smell (once thought there might be a smell of a gas leak in our road - no one else could smell it for 3 days ).. and I find nearly all perfumes make me gag.
I really love Jasper Conran, found it for my wedding, and now 3 of my friends wear it; but then DH bought me a Creed perfume and I realised just how chemical the JC was

But most of all I hate all air fresheners, and nappy bags. Why would you want to introduce new chemicals into your house when it's already prob. seething with them? used to like fabric conditioner, when it left a tiny bit of fresh scent, but now they're all so over the top.......... is there such a thing as an eco/non scented nappy bag btw?

Splosh of Lavender oil, water, good shake in a plant spray does the trick and makes bedlinen smell lovely.. but most of all

just open the windows for 10 minutes everyday

ahem, sorry about that...

SoupDreggon · 27/03/2007 12:57

eco/non scented nappy bag - yes there is. Can't for the life of me remember who makes them but they're made either from cornstarch or chalk and you can get them in Waitrose.

SoupDreggon · 27/03/2007 13:00

I once tested a small spray of Angel on my wrist. Within about 30 minutes I would gladly have chewed my own arm off to get rid if it. Not that it would have worked because it took weeks for the scent to disappear from my jacket.

Fabric softener - only the "pure" varieties will do fo rme. I could even smell my mum's fabric softener on BabyDragon's head when she'd slept on sheets washed with it.

ruty · 27/03/2007 13:08

the scent free biodegradable nappy sacks are from Nature Babycare - they also do very good nappies -70% biodegradable - not perfect but pretty good. I cannot abide scented nappy sacks - really vomit inducing.

A girl I worked with used to wear The Bodyshop's Dewberry. I swear you smelt her before you saw her.

i do find it quite interesting that so many people are anti-strong fragrance but those who wear it are saying 'i like it therefore i'll wear it...' which is fine, of course, but i'm curious to know whether it's news to people that they are making others retch and giving them headaches?

ScottishMummy · 27/03/2007 13:19

blimey - a support group needeD for the angel fragrance wearers they are getting pilloried at the mo

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere -thinking bout ur question i guess it all question of self perception/judgement eg what smells divine/femminine to one lady smells likes toxic cloud to another

bit like clothes and outfits really - when someone steps out thinking im looking buff today everyone else is thinking ^wow Peggy Mitchell or what

hunkermunker · 27/03/2007 13:21

I wore Bodyshop Vanilla when I was 14 - wore it once. It smelt like playdough on my skin... [freak]

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 27/03/2007 13:25

nope, that's not it. i don't get headaches from other people's bad clothes. have you ever considered that you may be making work colleagues sick? why so unrepentant?

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 27/03/2007 13:25

and angel is vile, utterly boaksome.

Caligula · 27/03/2007 13:25

LOL at the person who smells of Stella. There was me thinking she was confessing to a drink problem.

I love strong smelling scents like poison etc., but mostly on other people. (Obsession smells like fly killer on me)

And men with aftershave - yes I like it, but that may be because the alternative round here is fags, stella and sweat (and it's the beer stella I'm talking about, and that's if you're lucky - mostly it's the cheaper stuff)

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 27/03/2007 13:27

i am rather partial to a light spray of stella perf, my friend wears it, it's lovely. but the people who think that they need to constantly spritz themselves with the stuff, that's weird.

ScottishMummy · 27/03/2007 13:29

No complaints here at my work bout my perfume or the other girls...no sick colleagues either

why the arsey tone

got nothing to be unrepentatnt about

i smell gorgeous today and everyday...because im worth it LOL

NotAitchNoWaySheIsElsewhere · 27/03/2007 13:31

have you asked them? i wouldn't complain about it to someone per se, but if they asked me if i would prefer if they toned it down a bit i'd tell the truth. i take it you would prefer it if your colleagues didn't fart in your face all day... well, hard as it may be to believe some people don't think that much of Angel either.
