Do you wear strong perfume? Because you make my ruddy head ache and I wish you would stop. Everyone else thinks so too but they are too polite to tell you that you stink.

I think that more or less covers it.

That is English, nulnulcat!

AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 15:13

i think it translates as 'fabric conditioner is bogging'

expatinscotland · 29/03/2007 15:15

but it can come in handy when you have bothersome people in your office and you want them to leave .

fineanddandy · 29/03/2007 15:20

Reeking of perfume is better than smelling of piss, sh*it or BO as lots of people do - nothing worse if you have to sit next to them on public transport.

AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 15:32

yikes, where on earth do you live? or do you reek of shit and piss unless slathered in perfume? really?

OrmIrian · 29/03/2007 16:18

Hmm... that seems to be a recurring theme on here..... you either smell like a rotting haddock or like a exploded chemist shop. IME most people manage to avoid the 2 extremes. I do....I hope >

Lovecat · 29/03/2007 16:34

I grew up living down the road from the Caramac factory. Mmmm, the air smelt good....

I do wear Opium and Obsession, but only because the light perfumes evaporate on me within 2 seconds of spray.

I also use fabric conditioner - didn't realise it was such a sin... - I like my clothes to feel soft, we live in a very hard water area...

And I have a sneaking fondness for the cheapo perfume of my youth, Kiku - anyone remember that one? Faux-Japanese yellow packaging? My friend came upon it in a clearance house and bought a stash of it for me - every time I put it on it reminds me of cider and black, being 17 and feeling v. daring for getting past the bouncers into the local nightclub!

nulnulcat · 29/03/2007 18:44

one woman came into the salon for a bikini wax and she really did smell of rotten fish!! and she had crusty stuff on her thighs it really was minging and surely no one can say this extreme of being natural is preferable to smelling of strong perfume

and i refused to do the wax

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2007 19:47

Nulnulcat I don't get why you keep offering these extreme examples as the alternative to wearing strong perfume?

Are you really anxious about the way your body smells? Because it's coming across that you think without perfume, the human body reeks of fish, BO, or piss.

OP posts:
nulnulcat · 29/03/2007 20:42

im coming up with extremes because unfortunatley there are many people out there that really do stink of BO etc and you are entitled to think that those of us that were perfume are offensive and i find anyone who smells of sweat / bo etc offensive.

its just a good job im not any of your neighbours! with my fabric conditioner smelling washing bbq's in summer and me reeking of perfume the smell pollution police would just be banging my door down and carting me off!

FrannyandZooey · 29/03/2007 20:44

But how does you saying that you think something is offensive cancel out the fact that we don't like strong perfumes?

It's as if you asked me to stop hitting you and I said "Ah but I don't like people kicking me."

What has it got to do with anything?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 20:45

you are being really odd about this, nnc. i don't get it... i find the smell of BO, rotten fish, piss and shit quite, quite awful. i don't think anyone's disputing that, are they?

AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 20:47

x-post with franny. just didn't want you to think it was a gang-up, nulnul.

nulnulcat · 29/03/2007 21:03

its the whole anti perfume stance that annoys me and not just the perfume you wear it is anti fabric conditioner air freshener.

at the end of the day im not going to stop wearing strong perfume and if someone doesnt like it thats there problem, i mean if im out and someone objects to my perfume then realistically what can i do?

everyone is entitled to their opinions you all hate strong perfume but there are some people that love it and the perfume industry is a multi million pound industry so i think there are rather a lot of women who like wearing it

NotQuiteCockney · 29/03/2007 21:06

NNC, it's not really a matter of 'objecting' to perfume, it's a matter of feeling really ill because of it. I don't seem to be exposed to muh perfume these days, but I've certainly had bad headaches from other people's perfume and aftershave.

AitchTwoOh · 29/03/2007 21:16

realistically, you could make a mental note not to wear so much perfume in future because now you know that it makes people ill.

OrmIrian · 30/03/2007 07:59

"surely no one can say this extreme of being natural is preferable to smelling of strong perfume "

NO. It isn't. That's the point that several people (inlc me) were making. It's like that Harry Enfield character....'" If you stop people wearing a whole bottle of perfume every day, they'll all smell like rotten fish! Is that what you want 'cos that's what'll happen"

There is such a thing as compromise.... Someone who has seriously bad personal hygiene needs to sort themselves out - but preferably with a shower and clean clothes, not by spraying chemicals all over themselves.

oatcake · 30/03/2007 08:10

Le jardin de max factor...

Ysatis....

perfumes from my youth which make me want to yak.

(I actually like Lush's Karma but only use the soap. is this ok?)

My favourite, Clinque's Wrappings, is no longer made which is annoying. (I'll quickly point out that I don't drench in it and wear any perfume only on 'special ocassions'!)

ScottishMummy · 30/03/2007 09:04

Horey its Friday Good Morning everyone Im fragrant today wearing stella

warthog · 30/03/2007 09:07

sat next to someone on the train yesterday and was asphyxiated.

spray the air, and then walk into the scent. nice and subtle.

a friend of mine left her jacket last week. it's ponged the house out.

expatinscotland · 30/03/2007 09:29

It's Coco here, ScottishMummy!

I've had a shower and am wearing clean clothes, but you know, I like the smell of Coco on me.

I also love the smell of BBQs. They remind me of home and warm.

ScottishMummy · 30/03/2007 09:53

hello expat- yes u smell good to me through the MN smellatron tecnology

im smelling toast right now, cos one of the nurses just made some....mmmmmm

expatinscotland · 30/03/2007 10:00

I love to hear DD1 say, 'Mummy, you smell so nice.'

sunnyjim · 30/03/2007 10:00

oh god yes - anything with synathetic musk is pure evil.

What on earth is the point of perfume that you can smell at 50 paces?

Someone once told me the classy way to wear perfume is to put a single drop everywhere you would like to be kissed, and the smell should just be discernable to someone hugging you - it then lures them in to say 'mmmm you smell nice' and want to kiss you!

sunnyjim · 30/03/2007 10:02

oh btw, I use soaps, shower gels etc from a perfume range rather than the scent itself - softer more subtle smell.

The ones I've found that dont' do my head or DH head in are:
Caroline Herrara (sp?)
Penhaligons
