Having my wisdom teeth out tomorrow - v.nervous.

Smurfgirl · 25/03/2007 15:55

I am having all 4 of my wisdom teeth out under a general anaestetic at 3pm tomorrow and I am SO nervous and worried.

My boyfriend is coming with me and will stay as long as he can. I think I am staying in overnight - depends on me I guess! He has Tuesday off work as well so hopefully I will be ok on my own on Weds!

Also I am having it done somewhere I have just been on placement so I am scared of embarrasing myself or something. Hmm.

Oh and my mum and dad are not being sympathetic at all - refusing to come and see me at the weekend. Ho hum. I suppose I am an adult now blah blah.

Anyway...just wanted to get it out I think!

I would deffo stay in Smurf.
My dh insisted he came out the same day and then scared himself witless when his gums started to bleed a little.

We didnt live together at the time but I saw him the day after and he told me he thought he was going to die, pmsl

I didn't get the choice - op at 1.00pm, out at 4.00pm.

Twas painful, obviously, but not as bad as I expected, healed fine - no pain now at all!

Good luck

I was a bit against staying in but a nurse said it can be nice because when something a bit scary does happen you can have the reassurance that its ok (or isn't) whereas at home you have to put up or troop to a&e.

My boyfriend says he will look after me. Seeing as he can barely wash up I am skeptical

At least he's showing willing.

wurlywurlyCOVEREDinCHOCOLATE · 25/03/2007 16:38

smurf they dont normally keep you in over night. I would jusr go home and go to bed.

Smurfgirl · 25/03/2007 16:40

i am going private so i should be able to chose I think - the staff there recommended I stay in but I am going to see how I feel. Nicer to be in your own bed but nice to be in the hosp if you are scared hmm.

I'd stay in to be honest, but only because I'm a total wimp and would be upset and freak out if something a bit odd happened.

I was kn ocked out for ONE tooth out aged 17 becuase I had a total BF when dentist said he would do it under local!

Lots of small children in waiting room, fearfully watching me walk past as I sobbed in my Dad's arms on way out

God I was wet

MamaG · 25/03/2007 16:41

!(and it wasn't even a wisdom tooth)!

Smurfgirl · 25/03/2007 16:43

That is what I will be like MamaG - I have no tolerance for pain [blush[ but everyone in a wimp before they have kids yes?

OP posts:
MamaG · 25/03/2007 16:48

smurf, just stay in if you can, if you are a wuss you'll feel safe

Judy1234 · 25/03/2007 17:36

I had 3 out years ago just in the dentist chair and one last summer. Last summer it was the worst pain I'd had for years. I spent about 4 days in bed - it was our holiday in Greece the next day and I really really needed much stronger painkillers than I had there which was just paracetomol etc. Get in a stock of the strongest pain killers anyone will give you and look up "dry tooth" on the internet which is what I had - very commmon condition afterwards.

warthog · 25/03/2007 20:31

i had all 4 of mine out under gen an. and it was fine. the bottom two were severely impacted - they had to pulverise them (sorry if tmi). i was a musician at the time and they said no playing for 10 days, but had to go back to work after 7. had no problems.

had it done at 10, discharged at 2.

just see how you feel and stay in if you feel wobbly.

good luck

Had one of my wisdom teeth out a few years ago on the NHS. I opted for intravenous sedation as it was only local anaesthetic and I was terrified. Didn't help that people kept telling me horror stories about faces swelling up, extreme pain etc. As it happened getting the IV in was the most stressful bit as I have crappy veins, but once the opiates hit I was floaty light . Having the tooth out wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, and I recovered fairly quickly. Was a bit wobbly the next day, had day off work, but then fine. Bruise on my jaw looked liked I'd been in a fight, but not really that painful.

warthog · 28/03/2007 12:50

how was it? how are you feeling?

Smurfgirl · 28/03/2007 13:05

Thanks for asking I am in a lot of pain which sucks - but only on one bit of my mouth which is better than everywhere hurting. I am v.swollen as well v.attractive. Hopefully I will start to feel a bit better by this evening? Hmm.

warthog · 28/03/2007 13:35

Smurfgirl · 28/03/2007 14:34

Soup for tea,
Soup for breakfast tomorrow,
Soup for lunch tomorrow,
Soup for tea tomorrow
Squishy cereal for breakfast on Friday
Squishy boiled eggs or something for lunch on Friday
Soup for tea on Friday.

Do NOT allow your dh/dp to take you to a steakhouse for your tea on Saturday as a reward for being brave

(I speak from experience!)

Smurfgirl · 28/03/2007 14:44

So far have managed soup, melted choc and mash!! Am surprised at how swollen my face is (pic in my profile) and how little I can open my mouth.

Ow at steak!! When could you eat normally again?

OP posts:
CadburyCremeSquonk · 28/03/2007 15:04

That pic doesn't look too bad - although if you normally have a very thin face, then ouch!

I think it was about three weeks before I could eat properly, but only about a week until I could open my mouth enough to eat more than soup.

The night he took me for steak, he cut it up into tiny tiny cubes for me, literally about 5mm square!

Smurfgirl · 28/03/2007 16:08

My cheeks are not chubby naturally at all so I am quite swollen, have black eyes today as well, fab! I look very sweet though, apparently swollen suits me!

I tried to eat chocolate fondue yesterday but I couldn't fit teeeny cubes of marshmallow into my mouth (how greedy am i!)
LOL at teeny steak I can imagine! I was so prepared for the swelling just did not imagine with that it would be too hard to open my mouth!

OP posts:
divamumplusbump · 28/03/2007 17:27

they normally heal surprisingly quick, so you will be eating steak after 1 week, i guess.
