Dd2's parent and toddler group sing 'Baa Baa rainbow sheep'?
Apparently 'Baa Baa black sheep' is seen as racist.
I thought there were black sheep? surely saying the word 'black' when describing a colour isn't racist?
What do you think?

It's exactly this silliness that does offend, actually!

Indith · 11/03/2007 11:56

I think the world has gone to pot. My fave example though is that we should now say chalk board not blackboard yet white board is ok.

amyjade · 11/03/2007 11:57

they also sing 'the little child who lives down the lane' as saying 'little boy' might be seen as sexist!

amyjade · 11/03/2007 12:00

My LO is only 8 weeks old so don't know but I am so shocked. That is just so ridiculous it's untrue.

wilkie50 · 11/03/2007 12:01

And yes you do get black sheep

ChippyMinton · 11/03/2007 12:07

Courtesy of my DC:

baa baa pink sheep have you any wool
no sir no sir no bags full
none for the turkey
none for the fox
and none for the little girl with holes in her socks

PC or not?

Swizzler · 11/03/2007 12:23

Some people think it's about the slave trade (hence substitution) but I seem to remember it's about the poll tax so no reason to cause offence.

Even worse, rainbow sheep doesn't scan

Blandmum · 11/03/2007 12:39

Nevere come across 'Rainbow sheep' By kids were taugh Baa, baa black sheet and baa, baa white sheep. No probs.

It is supposed to be about a tax levied on Wool produced in the UK BTW.

Nothing to do with the slave trade.

Most of this 'You can't say 'black board' is simply not true BTW.

southeastastra · 11/03/2007 12:50

i've never come across it either, loads of pcness are urban legends

fuzzywuzzy · 11/03/2007 12:56

My dd sings the orginal baa baa black sheep version. My nephews school no longer has black boards, they have these whizzy white board type things that apparantly do everything down to making cups of tea.....

We always used 'blackboards' at my school.

The uni where I work use big screen computers I think blackboards have died out tbh.

I've never come across anyone ever being reprimanded in real life over either the nursery rhyme or referring to the blackboard as such....outside of newspapers obviously.

Could the singing of sheep of other colours be an aid to learning colours instead of anything PC???

deaconblue · 11/03/2007 14:18

pc gone mad. Baa baa and lots of different coloured sheep goes down well here though as it makes the song less boring when you have to sing it over and over and over

Nockney · 11/03/2007 14:23

Are you sure they're doing it because of fears of racism? I've read articles about nurseries doing this before, but it always turned out that they were doing it to have fun with the song, not out of any concern about racism.
