I thought I read or heard somewhere that this is what each child born after a certain date will get from the government but maybe I imagined this? I am getting child benefit for my dd who is now 3 months old but have not heard about this other lump sum - does anybody know anything about this?

Gordon Brown announced it in the budget but it doesn't take effect for ages and ages; kids born after some date in the past two years will qualify but God knows when the money will acutally turn up. Reminds me, we owe our baby about £700 we keep forgetting to put in an account for him. Bad parents...

Arabella - I thought I read somewhere that it comes in effect on April 2005 and includes all babies from something like 2002(but that date could be wrong) There is another payment made on the child's 7th or 8th birthday (how much attention was I paying) of the same amount.
Sure someone else will know a bit more detail

my dd was born in nov 2002 and I haven't heard anything at all. government is well behind in implementing this. let's hope they organise it better than the tax credits....

It's some sort of account. There have been problems with the providers & some legal thing but it will apply to all children born after- I THINK- 1/9/02. You won't be able to get at the money until the child is 18, so I think it's just a way of them turning round & saying they don't have to make provision for student funding because you've had your money!

i heard u get a certificate or something that u take into a bank and they set up the account for your baby (born on or after 1/9/02). its £500 for those on low incomes.

This is the latest I've heard. Looks like they're going to be launched April next year, but for all children born on or after 1 Sep 02.
