Puff the Magic Dragon!!!!

Don't think she understood it properly.

I did try and explain that mummy cries when she hears this song.

A more accurate description would be that mummy sobs uncontrollably and has to be helped to bed.

WHOEVER THOUGHT THIS WAS A SUITABLE SONG FOR CHILDREN???? (or anyone?)

I get a bit teary when listening to
this . The video has obviously been made on someones camera, instead of proffesionally, as it's a bit wobbly

kimi · 09/03/2007 23:12

OMG don't cry daddy, and in the getto, mum had tons of Elvis when i was growing up. Wonder what she did with them, i hear Ebay calling

Twiga · 09/03/2007 23:12

Another one that I don't remember well but always gets my Mum (see being a sentimental wuss runs in our family) is one I think is called ""Laura. About a young man killed during a car race - had entered the race to raise money for an engagment ring for his fiancee, laura. Sure someone on here can dig up a link inthe time it takes me to google it - think it's late 70's sometime.

kimi · 09/03/2007 23:12

And tell Laura I love her

The chorus of 'Jump up behind me' (James Taylor) always makes me blub because our old pony was called Dan and my sister and I both used to ride him at the same time. Happy days.

This land is a lovely green, it reminds me of my own home.
Such children I've seldom seen, even in my own home.
The sky is so bright and clean, just like my home.
Kind people as have ever been, won't you take me back to my own home?

Jump up behind me, my love, jump up behind me.
Old Dan can bear us both, jump up behind me.
We follow this road till we reach the sea, jump up behind me.
We'll catch the tide and set Dan free, jump up behind me.

I've been in this world awhile and I've seen a lot of country.
Many days and many miles, all various and sundry.
I've had my way and I've had my fun and I've had my chance to run free,
burning hot beneath the sun, freezing cold and wintry.

Jump up behind me, my love, jump up behind me.
Old Danny can carry us both, jump up behind me.
We follow this road till we reach the sea, jump up behind me.
We'll catch the tide and set old Dan free, jump up behind me.

I know now, only one thing matters in these day.
One thing, true love, love and love alone, true love.

Came out of a dream last night, thought I was back in my old home.
Mom and Dad were both still alive and the babies not yet born, no.
Felt like a festival and it felt like a Christmas morning,
felt the darkness fall away even as the world was turning on,
I mean even as the world was turning on. La la la la la, la la la la. I say.
Jump up behind me, my love, jump up behind me.
Follow the road to the western sea.

SpringisherePann · 09/03/2007 23:18

edam! - you just don't understand.....

"Those were the days, my friend.." from Mary Hopkins always has me stopped when I think of it.

and the Dorothy Moore's

"just the thought of you,
turns my whole world Misty Blue"

is such a torcher..

singersgirl · 09/03/2007 23:18

But it's not about a dragon, Edam (I know you know that). It's about growing up, and the loss of innocence, and mortality. It's about being born astride a grave. It's why DS2 sobbed on the eve of his 5th birthday "I don't want to be older". Oh well. It's now about having had too much red wine.....

bubblagirl · 09/03/2007 23:20

kimi · 09/03/2007 23:25

Twiga · 09/03/2007 23:27

MarsLady · 09/03/2007 23:28

Oh dear Lord..............

Billy Don't be a Hero

The marchin' band came down along Main Street
The soldier-blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line
And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood, I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say

"Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"
And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"

The soldier-blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried "We've got to hang on, boys"
"We got to hold this piece a'ground"
"I need a volunteer to ride up"
"And bring us back some extra men"
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgettin' all the words she said

She said
"Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"
And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"

I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away

Hey... The Most Beautiful Girl

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her.

I woke up this morning, and realized what I had done
I stood alone in the cold gray dawn
And I knew I'd lost my morning sun
I lost my head and I said some things
Now come the heartaches that the morning brings
I know I'm wrong and I couldn't see
I let my world slip away from me.

Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her.

Did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?
Hey, if you happen to see the most beautiful girl, that walked out on me
Tell her I'm sorry, tell her I need my baby
Oh, won't you tell her, that I love her

Did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world?
And if you did was she crying, cryin?

Sob!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Marslady. As i said DH1 used to sing that to me

MarsLady · 09/03/2007 23:32

THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS (Bette Midler)

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way,
you always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name -- for so long,
a beautiful smile to hide the pain.

CHORUS:
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and ev'rything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it,
I would be nothing with out you.

(CHORUS)

Fly, fly, fly away,
you let me fly so high.
Oh, fly, fly,
so high against the sky, so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you,
the wind beneath my wings.
