Puff the Magic Dragon!!!!

Don't think she understood it properly.

I did try and explain that mummy cries when she hears this song.

A more accurate description would be that mummy sobs uncontrollably and has to be helped to bed.

WHOEVER THOUGHT THIS WAS A SUITABLE SONG FOR CHILDREN???? (or anyone?)

This is sad too.

KENNY ROGERS - COWARD OF THE COUNTY

everyone considered him the coward of the county
he?d never stood one single time to prove the county wrong
his mama named him Tommy, but folks just called him Yellow
something always told me they were reading Tommy wrong

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison
I looked after Tommy, ´cause he was by brother?s son
I still recall the final words my brother said to Tommy
?son, my life is over, but yours has just begun?

CHORUS Promise me son not to do the things I?ve done
walk away from trouble if you can
it won?t mean you?re weak if you turn the other cheek
I hope, you?re old enough to understand
son, you don?t have to fight to be a man

There?s someone for everyone, and Tommy?s love was Becky
in her arms he didn?t have to prove he was a man
one day while he was working, the Gatlin boys came calling
they took turns at Becky (there was three of them)

Tommy opened the door and saw his Becky crying
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand
he reached above the fireplace and took down his daddy?s picture
as his tears fell on his daddy?s face, he heard this word again

CHORUS

The Gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the bar room
one of them got up and met him half way cross the floor
when Tommy turned around they said ?hey look old Yellow?s leaving?
but you could?ve heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door

Twenty years of crawling were bottled up inside him
he would hold nothing back - - he let ?em have it all
when Tommy left the bar room, not a Gatlin boy was standing
he said ?this one?s for Becky?, as he watched the last one fall

(now hear him say)

?I promised you dad not to do the things you?ve done
I walk away from trouble when I can
now please don?t think I?m weak I didn?t turn the other cheek
and papa I should hope you understand
sometimes you gotta fight when you?re a man?
Everyone considered him the coward of the county

Eric Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven' makes me sob because it is about his poor boy who died.

One from my childhood that sets me off is 'Pal of My Cradle Days' by Ann Breen. It used to be on a tape that my mum had when I was little. My mum and I used to play 'discos' in our living room and dance to the tape. On the Royle Family Christmas special, Joe the neighbour sang it at Nanna's wake and I was in pieces.

Lyrics...
What a friend, what a pal, only now I can see,
How you dreamed and you planned all for me,
I never knew what a mother goes through,
There's nothing that you didn't do.

Chorus:
Pal of my cradle days, I've needed you always.
Since I was a baby upon your knee,
You sacrificed everything for me.
I stole the gold from your hair.
I put the silver threads there,
I don't know any way I could ever repay,
Pal of my cradle days.

Greatest friend, dearest pal,
It was me who caused you
Every sorrow and heartache you knew,
Your face so fair Is wrinkled with care,
I placed every line that is there,

Repeat Chorus: End

ledodgy · 11/03/2007 00:16

That is so sad

magicfarawaytree · 11/03/2007 00:20

One of the saddest, and most haunting songs. Suffer little children by morrissey. chills me to the bone..

Over the moor, take me to the moor
Dig a shallow grave
And I'll lay me down

Over the moor, take me to the moor
Dig a shallow grave
And I'll lay me down

Lesley-Anne, with your pretty white beads
Oh John, you'll never be a man
And you'll never see your home again
Oh Manchester, so much to answer for

Edward, see those alluring lights ?
Tonight will be your very last night

A woman said : "I know my son is dead
I'll never rest my hands on his sacred head"

Hindley wakes and Hindley says :
Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says :
"Oh, wherever he has gone, I have gone"

But fresh lilaced moorland fields
Cannot hide the stolid stench of death
Fresh lilaced moorland fields
Cannot hide the stolid stench of death

Hindley wakes and says :
Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says :
"Oh, whatever he has done, I have done"

But this is no easy ride
For a child cries :

"Oh, find me ... find me, nothing more
We are on a sullen misty moor
We may be dead and we may be gone
But we will be, we will be, we will be, right by your side
Until the day you die
This is no easy ride
We will haunt you when you laugh
Yes, you could say we're a team
You might sleep
You might sleep
You might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !
Oh, you might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !
You might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !"

Oh Manchester, so much to answer for
Oh Manchester, so much to answer for

Oh, find me, find me !
Find me !
I'll haunt you when you laugh
Oh, I'll haunt you when you laugh
You might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !
Oh ...
Over the moors, I'm on the moor
Oh, over the moor
Oh, the child is on the moor

ledodgy · 11/03/2007 00:22

Oh God that is so, so sad. I'm going to bed now.
