Having never dyed anything before.

I have a 5 yr olds gold brocade jacket that I need to dye purple (we need a willy wonka jacket).

First of all I'm not sure how it will dye, and secondly where the hell do I buy dye from?

And do I do it in the bath or in my washing machine? (and will it manke my future washes purple?!!)

Tia

You can dye in a washing machine with no mess at all, but synthetics dye really badly. What is the jacket made of?

Backy it's a homemade jacket so no label in it. It was my pageboys at my wedding.

It's gold brocade, feels a bit silkyish and has a slight feathery pattern to it.

Could it be a disaster?

I think it could. I've never dyed brocade!

If you can get hold of a packet of dye, it will tell you what materials take the dye well.

I've only done cotton.

I use Dylon (I think).

Perhaps they have a website and a customer helpline you could call/email and ask.

From their website:

"Suitable fabrics: cotton, linen, viscose and polyester/cotton mixes. Lighter shades on polyester mixes because pure synthetics do not pick up the dye."

If you send them a fabric sample they'll tell you if you can dye it apparently!

also remember when you dye a natural fabric it will take really well BUT the stitching may be synthetic so will stay as it was(so it will stand out)
(sometimes that can look nice though?)

BE CAREFUL IF YOU DO DYE IT IN UR WASHING MACHINE CAUSE IT WRECKED MY WASHER AS WHEN I DID IT,IT STAINED ALL MY CLOTHES AND THATS AFTER I CLEANED MY WASHER OUT LOADS OF TIMES WITH BLEACH.

Really? I've used machine dyes quite a few times and never had any problems.

I do always wash an old white nappy immediately afterwards to check though.
