heh logathon.

possibly a stupid question: how do you get it out? does it have a string? or do you have to feel around in the dark?

Yes, highly disturbing when you suddenly think: where the hell has it gone? But needless to say, due to it being physically impossible, it hasn't vanished forever Just bear down and squeeze!

Legacy et al

re leaks
I had the same problem in the second or third month. I think the problem is that the silicone softens up a bit and doesn't 'pop' into shape so well inside you. The answer is to insert and then do a little pull down again to make sure it's fully 'inflated'. In fact you can actually feel if it has a nice round shape at the cone end or a wonky kink that will make it leak. squash and then squelch as suzywong told me. This has sorted all my similar leaky problems.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly is a mooncup???

mawbroon · 27/02/2007 21:12

Well, seeing we are talking mooncups....
I am using mine for the second day today but was having leakage yesterday. I re-read the instructions and it said it might leak if it's not low enough down, so I think mine was too far in. So how does that work then - leaking if it's too far in??
Also, I find that the blood is really stringy and it's actually quite difficult to separate the stringy bit between mooncup and fanjo. Am I freak? And I have the problem of the big streak on the bottom of the bog despite pouring it on to toilet paper.

Shimmy - hmm yes, you might be right. I can certainly tell if it's not perfectly cone-shaped after insertion, and I think that COULD make a difference?

decafskinnylatte · 28/02/2007 10:20

I used mine for the first time last month and loved it! Was v cynical (wore large pad for the first day) but was amazed. So comfy & no leaks! (Feel like I should be trampolining in white trousers at this point!). Can't understand why they're not marketed better - the only place I've ever read about them is on here. Weirdly quite looking forward to trying it out again this month . Dh finds the whole thing quite amusing. In answer to my usual pre-menstrual rantings this week, he yelled at me "oh, go & boil your mooncup!"

I do have questions for you mooncup veterans though:

1.would you ever wear one to go swimming?
2.do they have a shelf life? should you replace it after a while?

  1. also worry about the stingy bit/fanjo thing. Is there a technique to deal with this?
whiffywarthog · 28/02/2007 10:43

what's the stingy bit / fanjo thing?

decafskinnylatte · 28/02/2007 11:24

oops, meant stRingy bit - as per mawbroon's post!

Ok, this is a bit graphic but do you notice though that if you have a mooncup leak it's way less of a staining problem due to the fascinating separation of the heavy red blood to the bottom so the bit that leaks is more pinky fluid?

And yes, I had a fascinating discussion with the midwife over the state of my placenta after childbirth...

fleacircus · 28/02/2007 12:43

Not wishing to sound like a freak (although looking over this thread not sure if that's possible ), I like with the Mooncup the fact that the blood is like blood, albeit complete with stringy bits. It's more visceral, less female eunuch, IYSWIM.

Shonaspurtle, did you consider cooking it up and eating it? Go on, you can tell us...

whiffywarthog · 28/02/2007 12:58

dsl, few, wasn't looking forward to stingy bits

whiffywarthog · 28/02/2007 12:58

ahem phew

shonaspurtle · 28/02/2007 12:58

Eeeeewwww - no I was more interested in the manner of small boy poking roadkill with a stick.

shonaspurtle · 28/02/2007 13:00

Not that I poked my placenta with a stick (or anything else) you understand.

mawbroon · 28/02/2007 13:15

I'm still leaking today. WTF am I doing wrong?

shonaspurtle · 28/02/2007 13:20

It is definitely unfolding fully iykwim?

You know how you have to fold it to put it in, well I find that I get leaks if I don't twist it and pull it back a bit so it kind of pops into shape. You need it to be completely unfolded so that there's a proper seal.

mawbroon · 28/02/2007 13:25

I think it's fully opened. It sort of pops when I let it unfold, but I will try your top tip and see if it works.

mawbroon · 28/02/2007 13:49

I forgot to say. I ordered mine from Ethical superstore online and as it was fairtrade fortnight, I got a free bar of chocolate with it. PMSL at the thought that anyone ordering a mooncup is also in need of chocolate....

fleacircus · 28/02/2007 16:14

Am going to order one for my sister without telling her. Imagine an unexpected mooncup arriving through the post, what a fabulous gift.

decafskinnylatte · 01/03/2007 11:27

I was going to buy one for a friend until I overheard her asking her sister if she didn't have any applicator tampons because she didn't "do" the non-applicator types. Am guessing she's the type that wouldn't do well with fiddling about in the dark!

Sorry to harp on but HAS anyone swum with one?? Or do you just stay "off games" for that time of the month?

Bozza · 01/03/2007 11:39

I have "swum" numerous times in mine. By "swum" I mean gone in the pool in my costume with my DCs rather than actually lifted my feet of the bottom. There is only me to take DS to his swimming lessons and until he turned 6 he needed someone to go in the water with him. And now he is 6 DD has started lessons. I always pop to the loo just beforehand though.

And when I was having almost constant bleeding due to my implant I must have saved a fortune.
