I got engaged in February and we are starting to look around at venues to set the date for late summer next year hopefully.

Thing is, we have two young children, just about to move house and no savings BUT really want to get married and I really want to have a big day surrounded by friends and family (as oppose to running off and eloping or going abroad)

After my initial investigations I felt really depressed about how much it was going to cost us and thought we wouldnt be able to do it.

Firstly any money saving tips from you guys would be great, secondly this is what Im thinking......

Get married on a Friday (does this cut costs?)
Go to registry office for actual ceremony
Take 40 daytime guests to a restaurant for nice meal
Have evening reception at lovely venue
for about 150

Im thinking that this should be a way of still getting the kind of venue I want (but cant afford for the whole caboodle) - what do you think???

The most expensive part of our wedding was the booze and food for 120. We didn't have any night guests and were glad coz it worked out best that folk weren't turning up and having to wait for the day guests to finish their pudding.

My dress was £70!! It was gorgeous and new. The bride shops sell off all the previous years stock really cheaply so ask before they try to fob off the latest designs on you.

My SIL made the cake

We had no favours - waste of time and money

I made the invitations myself - total cost £28, and everyone thought I'd got them done professionally.

In Scotland (and I'm sure the rest of the UK is ahead of us on this) you can get married and have the reception in the same place so saving transport costs.

A buffet would be cheaper than a full sit down effort.

Don't bother with photographer - we got a cheap one but he was rubbish and the pics from the guests turned out to be better.

Don't bother with a posh hire car. My lovely brother drove me to the wedding in his Vauxhall which he'd given a polish and put white ribbons on.

Best of luck and enjoy the day when it comes as it all flies by too quickly.

Hope the wedding planner from M & S is better than the wedding magazine ones - which always tended to start book reception and venue 2 years in advance!!!
