Looking to move to Bedfordshire from London with husband and 16 month old does anyone know anything about living in Flitwick - schools/childcare - what's it like as a place? Any other recommendations for nice commutable areas in bedfordshire?

oati, are you walking the MK mile? I think I've missed the boat with this...

Oati · 21/02/2007 15:00

the date might not be good for me, Dave

littleharry · 21/02/2007 15:00

Will certainly have a look at Biggleswade - I know it's Herfordshire but does anyone know anything about Letchworth Garden City?

I'm in Sandy Muffin!! IMHO it has a few redeeming features, such as no shops that you'd want to spend money in! We've been here nearly 2 years and have cleared overdrafts and credit cards on the strength of that!!
Littleharry I was brought up in Letchworth, loads of green space, some good schools... Anything you'd like to know in particular? (Was going to give a brief outline but my mind has gone blank...)

MuffinMclay · 21/02/2007 16:09

Sorry Redclover. No offence intended! Our food bills fell dramatically in the few weeks we stayed there too.

One good thing about Sandy is that isn't too far for Cambridge - far nicer than London for shopping etc or just for a day out.

Letchworth seems OK, but Hitchin (next town along, and they practically merge together) is much nicer. Lots going on for babies and children in both places.

What about Welwyn - similar to Letchworth (new town), but perhaps slightly nicer. And it has a John Lewis.

Whoooosh · 21/02/2007 16:14

Agree with Tenalady I am afraid wrt trouble.

Hitchin really is lovely but yes,expensive-Letchworth is OK too.

Welwyn Garden City has good bits and bad bits but the good bits are lovely.

It took nearly a year to sell our house, dh has been working away for 8 months and this week we finally exchange contracts......only now I find out nobody would touch Potton with a bargepole (apart from the local troublesome gypsy community of course)

DaveOHara · 21/02/2007 16:38

not in Potton obviously (lol) sorry

DaveOHara · 21/02/2007 16:38

did anyone respond... oh god please tell me I didn't say it was lovely or something

detoxdiva · 21/02/2007 16:40

no - they were probably all trying to move illegal caravans from off their land

DaveOHara · 21/02/2007 16:46

lol, did that not tell you something??? lol sorry... I'm sure it's not that bad really..

detoxdiva · 21/02/2007 16:50

No, I'm kidding. I grew up round there and my family are kind of local, and we're really happy with the town and our beautiful new house. We've never experienced any problems, and are really looking forward to getting settled.

DaveOHara · 21/02/2007 16:51

Well in that case it'll be grand!

Whoooosh · 21/02/2007 17:08

It will be lovely I am sure and as you are practically a "local" you may be left alone
Hope the move goes well and you all settle in quickly.

redclover79 · 21/02/2007 18:28

Wooosh - I didn't think there were any gypsies in potton any more?

redclover79 · 21/02/2007 18:31

Or actually... detoxdiva- I didn't think there were any gypsies in potton anymore?

detoxdiva · 21/02/2007 18:40

I didn't see any lurking around when we were viewing the house ....sorry to littleharry for the complete hijack of your thread.....I hope you get the chance to come up to Beds soon and see some of these places and that your move goes well

IdrisTheDragon · 22/02/2007 10:13

We used to live in Letchworth and moved (about 5 miles) into Bedfordshire so we could afford a bigger house.

TenaLady · 22/02/2007 14:35

Somebody mentioned Biggleswade being in Hertfordshire, Nah sorry its in Bedfordshire.
