In my defence, I did try and make some, a long time ago. Disasterous is not the word!

To paraphrase Shirley Conran, life's too short to make your own hummous when factories can do it with added bacteria

Hi, as a microbiologist for a big supermarket (on maternity leave atm!)I can confirm that the withdrawls are a precautionary measure and the chances that you will become ill from eating the batches in question is very small. The one manufacturer in question produces these products for most supermarket own labels (and is based in London although owned by an Icelandic group)which is why its off the shelves in nearly all of them. Manufacturers carry out very comprehensive micro screening on raw materials and finished products and if there is any hint of a potential problem (even if its one pot out of 1000's made), the supermarkets whip it off the shelves faster than you can say 'Cadbury's'rather than have any bad press associated with their brand. I'm sure it will be back on very shortly and rest assured every supermarket will be testing it to death!
