According to a book called Mothers and Sons I got of Amazon. Started reading it last night and it is complete and utter tosh.

Do not buy it.

Also, a mother should not ever get undressed or go to teh loo in the presence of her young son as they will be more likely to 'suffer' from homosexuality when older.

WTF?

I was laughing out loud at how shit it is. Wonder if anyone takes it seriously?

In my insecure new parent days, I did a search on Amazon for Christian parenting books, and one came up which basically was How to Beat Your Babies and Children the Christian Way. And the reason I saw it was b/c it was Amazon's best-selling book on that search.

Please don't try and pretend these people aren't evangelical Christians b/c they are. They believe the Bible to be the inviolate word of God and can use it to justify pretty much everything they do. Instead of getting angry with those who point out which particular brand of Christianity they hang their hats on, get angry with them for abusing children and adults in God's name and twisting everything you believe in.

Northerner, I'm dying to know more but don't want to buy! What else does it say?

ruty · 07/02/2007 21:19

agree nearlythree. Amazon really don't have a clue though, bit scary they put a Biddulph book below this pile of poo as something evangelical child beaters might be interested in...

to op ( as haven't read the whole thread)
OMG, lolololol...my poor lads are all damaged for life then....I mean, they see me almost daily naked, cos they tend to follow me into the Bathroom, and see me on the toilet...and...hm...I always thought that masturbation is pretty normal behaviour, that maybe one couldn't encourage actively, one certainly shouldn't discourage neither (in privacy, lol)....hm.......sounds deifnately a odd book, lol....sort of old fashioned and "catholic"

3andnomore · 07/02/2007 21:34

Oh NOrtherner you must review it, to safe some other poor soul, lol!

Also, when I said "catholic" I didn't mean that catholics would necessarily do this, think like that...couldn't think of the term I meant, and couldn't think of anyhting better, but what I actually meant was "with an religious agenda in mind"

northerner · 07/02/2007 22:58

Have not got any enthusiasm to sit and read it, it goes on and on and on......

Whole chapter on masturbation, here is a snippet:

Innappropriate exposure to sex will result in icreased masturbation. Masturbation is harmful mainly to the childs moral and emotional wellbeing. When practised to excess it can lead to self reproach, a loss of self esteem and feelings of guilt.

There are several things a mother can do to keep masturbation in check. She can structure the childs day so that opportunities for masturbation are limited. Small children can be taught to sleep with their hands outside the covers. Little boys can wear trousers without pockets and should be discouraged from playing in dark, isoltaed places.

Increased masturbation and playing in dark, isolated places made me the man I am today...

3andnomore · 08/02/2007 10:02

lolololol northerner...that book sounds hilarious, tbh....I am almost tempted to buy it just for a larf

Unquietdad...my dh would probably agree with your sentiments completely

Hallgerda · 08/02/2007 10:58

I read in a children's book that the Queen had her pockets sewn up when she was a little girl, in order to prevent her from putting her hands in them in an unseemly fashion. Not a bad idea, I thought

Interesting that concerns about masturbation seem to be almost exclusively about boys - I wonder why? Perhaps nobody's had the nerve to tell the writers of books like Northerner's that girls do it too?

ruty · 08/02/2007 14:48

yes it is a bit like lesbians don't exist.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/02/2007 15:53

Its because men can't except that we do that sort of thing without them.

UnquietDad · 08/02/2007 16:35

if you mean "accept", then quite the opposite sometimes...

ruty · 08/02/2007 16:50

you old perv.

homemama · 08/02/2007 17:05

Not sure that 'no pockets' prevent anything. Whenever i've taught in Reception classes, the boys without pockets just stick their hands down the front of their trousers to fiddle.
IME though, little girls are at it far more often and just sit on the carpet with their hands up their skirts/dresses and down their knickers!

They do it because it feels nice and it passes the time during literacy hour

paulaplumpbottom · 08/02/2007 17:08

aahhh to be young again

magicfarawaytree · 06/05/2007 01:00

had to revive this - found it via a link - I have not laughed so much for ages.
