According to a book called Mothers and Sons I got of Amazon. Started reading it last night and it is complete and utter tosh.

Do not buy it.

Also, a mother should not ever get undressed or go to teh loo in the presence of her young son as they will be more likely to 'suffer' from homosexuality when older.

WTF?

I was laughing out loud at how shit it is. Wonder if anyone takes it seriously?

TBH, I think you'll find that a lot of loons and thugs use religion as a cover for their lunacy/thuggery. They pretend their actions are in God's name when really they just like beating people up or are control freaks.

donnie · 07/02/2007 14:07

I would use a straitjacket myself. More effective.

But I have daughters and not sons.

I wonder if DC has a red light that comes on at his pc whenever a new religious thread starts on Mumsnet?

I dunno, if you wiped out religion they'd be doing something else to justify their lunatic thoughts. It's just human nature to have a few loose screws around.

If it makes you feel better, my mother is this type of nut and yet I turned out ok

UnquietDad · 07/02/2007 14:12

Why would you want to stop him wanking? It's perfectly healthy and he's not going to get anyone pregnant by doing it....

Steve Biddulph is good, but unfair about nurseries.

Haven't seen Jenni Murray's book but one or two people have told me it's good.

clairemow · 07/02/2007 14:18

OMG!!! PMSL!!!

How totally ridiculous, on all counts...

Another vote for Steve Biddolph here, Raising Boys, and his other one, Secrets of Happy Children is pretty good too. Sensible. He has a whole chapter on the current trend of disaffection and rebellion in young men, and how young boys need lots of cuddles and affection from their mothers when they are small. It helps them to accept who they are and be happy in their own skins - how could we expect our sons to be happy in themselves if we behave as if we are not happy with them??

clairemow · 07/02/2007 14:19

Unquietdad, agree with you about Biddolph and nurseries though... Never, ever send a boy under 3 into childcare or it will damage him irreparably... - how realistic is that???!!

homemama · 07/02/2007 14:46

Was just wondering if wiping the poo from my 2yr old's bum is ok or is that just as bad as rubbing his back?

Maybe I should leave it until his Dad comes home at 7pm for fear of making him gay?

funkimummy · 07/02/2007 14:49

homemama - yeah that would be a good idea. I'll do the same with my 4 yr old, and they'll grow up happy, responsible, nappy wearing adults!

Rhubarb · 07/02/2007 14:56

I bind my kids hands together at all times.

dd is being fitted with a chastity belt soon, better safe than sorry eh? I might just get ds castrated, he's going to be the first British Pope anyway so he doesn't need one.

See, I'm perfectly normal despite my upbringing!

DominiConnor · 07/02/2007 14:59

No Rhubarb, I'm a C++ programmer, so it does all this stuff for me
I agree with you about loons using religion as an excuse, but also people do believe mad crap because religious leaders tell them.
This sort of thing was quite normal in Victorian times, when most people were actively Christian.

bumblebeee · 07/02/2007 15:04

Yet another vote for Steve Bidduph "Raising Boys". Really excellent book, kids Dad read it too and was v impressed. Can't beleive the stuff in your one tho northener!!

MissGolightly · 07/02/2007 15:07

LOL at the title "raising boys to be men". Is there a danger they will turn into women if not properly tucked in at night?

Flamesparrow · 07/02/2007 15:08

Anyone else liking the fact that the little subtitle thing (or whatever its actually called) says "Raising boys to be men"... as opposed to?!?!

Anyone else tempted to buy it for a laugh?

paulaplumpbottom · 07/02/2007 15:08

Of course there are some crazies out there Caligula, but you make it sound as if everyone in the Bible Belt or who is a born again Christian are loons. I don't think that a few looney Muslims represent the whole either. You are just commenting on what is a rare stereotype.

Rhubarb · 07/02/2007 15:21

Yes but DC, you've had gullible loons believing other loons for centuries! Look at Hitler! Mao!

So what alert do you have on your pc then? A little jingle?

donnie · 07/02/2007 17:59

DC was in fact castrated by the priests early on in life.

Years of bitter resentment have ensued.....

Aloha · 07/02/2007 18:29

I'm with Caligula. This is mainstream and even liberal in some circles. My local library had a sale of old books and kept them in the room where I take dd for music classes. I found a book that had clearly been in a local library and was about to be sold off, an American religious childrearing manual full of sick, disgusting stuff about beating babies. I tore up up and threw it in the bin. Amazon has a lot of American religious child-abuse manuals up for sale. It is disgusting, it should be illegal, but it isn't.

Caligula · 07/02/2007 18:29

Not that rare PPB. They're a significant slice of the vote, hence the politicians kowtowing to their lunacy.

clairemow · 07/02/2007 19:35

My DS would like it if the book was called "raising boys to be gruffalos", lol.

clairemow · 07/02/2007 19:36

oh, and hello homemama! How's things? - you've disappeared off the Sept thread?

Or in some cases actually belonging to it, Caligula! When is election year?

homemama · 07/02/2007 20:14

Sorry to hijack!

PeachyClair · 07/02/2007 20:16

Oh ffs!

Looks like my boys'll will all be gay wankers then.

Oh well.
