My dog is making my life a misery. I think I should get the vet to put him to sleep : (

He is 8, dp and I have had him since a puppy. I now have a one year old with quadraplegic cerebral palsy. My life is very stressful. My dog, a labradar, is great in every way apart from he regularly goes for other dogs. I cannot take him on lead walks around the neighbourhood, or in fact anywhere on the lead as this exacerbates his agression. I have to haul him off to a huge common where he can go off lead and avoid other dogs. He does not stalk dogs, but will attack if they get too close, also if he's on a lead will go ballistic if he sees another dog.

I have done EVERYTHING to stop this behaviour. I even became a dog walker for a couple of years to try to socialise him. He actually loves dogs he knows, and he loved coming dog walking with me once he knew the other dogs. But the behaviour with strange dogs never stopped. I did everything two "emminent" dog psychologists told me to - but no joy. His problem is fear aggression - he is scared of dogs he doesn't know so attacks defensively. He has never hurt another dog, but it sounds awful, frightens everyone who's around, is intensley embarrassing and has pulled my son over in pushchair a couple of times. I dread taking him out and I cannot hold on to him if he kicks off on the lead.

I have a lot of experience of dogs and I know this problem is genetic, there is nothing anyone can do about it. He was from a rescue home as part of a litter from a Welsh puppy farm.

I'm fed up, I can't take him anywhere, when I do, I'm a bag of nerves. It's become a real problem and is restricting my life more than it already is (which is a lot if you have a child with sn).

He's an absolutely lovely dog otherwise, never barks, is beautiful and loves people (as long as they're not shouty bouncy toddlers who scare him).

I'm on the verge of asking the vet to come and put him to sleep. I feel absolutely awful. Guilty. A failure.

Oh Gooseeg... what a shame. They are an absolute delight with people.
I'm so so sorry, I feel for you

"if he gets near any large male dog he just grabs them by the throat and shakes them"

I'm sorry, but unless you manage to train him in 3 weeks I can not imagine having such dog and a baby in the same house. But perhaps I'm biased... as that is exactly the way "good" dogs kill children by accident while playing, and... I have one aunt who had her dog killed by another dog exactly that way while she was walking him. So sorry I can not be more supportive.

chandra - no timescales, they're all volunteers so I just have to wait for a call.

gooseegg, sorry to hear that, it sounds very traumatic. I've heard a lot of people say that about staffies - great with people/kids etc rubbish with animals. The first time my dog was attacked by a dog it was a staffy.

danceswithnewboots - I'm in Surrey, is that too far away?

bethoo, I hope you can sort out your problem. My dog hates Boxers above all other breeds, he's terrified of them. Second most hated breed are Weimaraners because he's jealous of their steely good looks

I'm not sure dogtired. I'll check, if I have any luck I'll let you know. Hope you get this sorted soon.

A lot of dogs dislike boxers DT. Their natural facial expressions often reveal their teeth which is a sign of aggression in dogs, so obviously not often taken well by other dogs.
Just let me know if you want me to contact the place I found in my vets the other day

bethoo · 08/02/2007 08:50

winestein and dt - yes, i think it stems from when he was a puppy as every dog he encountered attacked him so it was a form of defence. because of their facial expressions and their deep chests other breeds find it hard to read their behaviour so feel instantly threatened.
Chandra - i have had babies and small children at my house and my dogs adore children and i know like every responsible dog owner never to leave children unsupervised with animals. alot of these incidents in the press could have been avoided if the children had not been left alone. my dogs have never shown aggression to people and how many incidents with dog attacks on humans have been boxers? they are known for their loving behaviour and love of children.

junkinmytrunk · 11/02/2007 20:28

So sorry that I missed this, I've been away on hols.

Don't know if anything has been sorted yet as I'm a bit late.
I've spoken to my friend and he doesn't have room for another dog and none of the other rangers do but he's going to keep an ear out for anyone else tho.

So sorry I couldn't be of any more help
