why do people who aren't buddhists have ornaments or pictures of buddha in their houses?
or are they secret buddhists?

It's supposed to be lucky. If you rub Buddha's tummy and make a wish it will come true (so I've heard)

Probably the same reason that some people wear a cross who are not christians, they like the look of it.
