Impossible to say without evidence. Does he have to be dragged out of bed kicking and screaming in order to get to school without a detention for being late?

I suppose each child is different, my son is quite hyper so when he's awake he's awake good and proper, when he's asleep even an earthquake wouldn't wake him.

He needs 10-11 hours and generally does get it.

DS2 gets about 8 hours, from 10-ish to 6am (for his paper round) - he is nearly 14 now but has not had much more sleep than that for several years, has to be nagged to go to bed and gets himself up no probs.

It does depend on the child.

I send mine to bed at 9pm, but according to him, all his friends are allowed to stay up until midnight. Yeah, right! However, I do have to drag him out of bed in the morning to go to school. He naturally wakes up at about 9.30am. He doesn't usually get to sleep till about 10pm, but if I sent him to bed at 10pm, he wouldn't go to sleep till 11. So, 11.5 hours is what he seems to need - 10 is what he gets.

ds2 is almost 12. Bedtime is 9.30 during the week and he is woken up at 7. I have noticed that he's harder to wake up recently - teenage hormones probably starting to kick in. There is evidence that teenagers need more sleep - think it's to do with brain development.
