Toilets, toilets everywhere...am I odd in thinking you can have too many

Was looking at the details of a new build house that we might just be able at a stretch to afford today.

Is 3 bed, 1 reception and has 3 toilets!!! Downstairs loo, bathroom upstairs and ensuite in the master bedroom.

Now this is by no stretch of the imagination a big house. Am I alone in thinking that the downstairs loo and the ensuite would have been way more useful as extra room space or big cupboards?

Where is the need for this many toilets? Really?

sounds about right to me. what's the point of an ensuite if you cant pee in the night with comfort lol.

Gingerbear · 27/01/2007 19:47

downstairs loo is often a requirement of building regulations these days. My brother is a builder and has to put in a downstairs loo that is accessible for disabled people.

Flower3554 · 27/01/2007 19:49

Downstairs loo's are fantastic when your trying to potty train.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 19:49

Ok, didnt' think about the access thing - the ensuite though, you'd be quicker probably going to the family bathroom ffs! Seriously, on the plans they are roughly equidistant from where your bed would be.

I think the ensuite is probably a waste of space. I live in a similar house only the only bathroom is downstairs and I actually find myself trying to go to bed with out drinking too much so I don't have to pee in the night.

Gingerbear · 27/01/2007 19:53

What, no chamber pot under the bed Carmenere? You used to be able to get the housemaid to empty them along with the ashes from the bed warmer in the mornings.

Gingerbear · 27/01/2007 19:54

And fill the tin bath for you in front of the coal fire.....

I hate this too. I'm all for a downstairs loo - my house is split-level on 3 storeys and I have 3 toilets, but none of them are on the same floor as the living-room and kitchen. I spend my life running up or downstairs to wipe bottoms. But the ensuite thing - aagh. Its just more toilets to clean.

There is a new estate here with 3-bed houses with two bathrooms. The smallest bedroom is smaller than the main bathroom. Why not scrap the ensuite and have a decent sized bedroom?

We went to see a house yesterday and were talking about building an extension. The estate agent enthusiastically said that we would be able to install an ensuite bathroom off the main bedroom. I nearly bit his head off while dh pissed himself laughing at me.

I have considered banning all use of our ensuite so that I don't have to clean it. I mean, there are only 3 of us capable of using a toilet, and two of us are capable of waiting, so we don't need 3 toilets.

Aagh. Rant. Rant.

littleducks · 27/01/2007 19:57

how many kids do you have? is there a shower in the en suite if there was a nice power shower in there that would be a good bonus to bath in family bathroom, agree bout potty training

but cleanining three loo??????

onlyjoking9329 · 27/01/2007 20:01

well we have one loo per child cos all the kids were all doing toilet training at the same time!
we have a downstairs loo a loo in the main bathroom and a separate loo upstairs, i suppose two loos is enough for three beds really but an extra can be useful.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 20:02

Not a shower room - that I could just about see the point of and would be a useful luxury. This is just a toilet and, presumably, a mini sink.

We'll be moving (if we ever get round to it) from a one bed tenement flat which has quite big rooms (albeit few of them) so fitting the furniture into these small new build rooms is a real issue for me.

actually, maybe i should explain my passion for ensuite loos. i 'm always up in the night to pee and if i get up after 5.30 am, i often wake dds up, so find myself lying in bed uncomfortable, rather than venturing off down the corridor.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 20:04

We only have one child and I doubt we'll have more than 2 so we would really be spoilt for choice on the loo front...

WideWebWitch · 27/01/2007 20:04

We have 2 loos and there are occasions when we could do with another one. With 2 children, 1 of whom is only just potty trained and who needs to go NOW when she needs to go I'd MUCH prefer it if we had one for each person!

onlyjoking9329 · 27/01/2007 20:05

it is handy having 2 upstairs loos one is the boys loo! which means no puddles or seats left up on the girls loo

airy · 27/01/2007 20:08

I stayed in a house a while ago, a three bed semi, not massive and it had four toilets!
two ensuite shower rooms with loo in the two biggest bedrooms, a main bathroom upstairs and another shower room with loo downstairs! lol
so four toilets a bath and three showers, that really is too much

marymillington · 27/01/2007 20:09

i guess, if you had two rugby-playing teenage boys and ensuite would come into its own. but i don't like them much, and they always seem to encroach on the bedroom. downstairs loo is absolute godsend though.

nearlyfourbob · 27/01/2007 20:11

We have 2 toilet in a one level, 4 bedroom house. One in the ensuite and one next to the family bathroom. If our house had a upstairs though I would want a third.

BettySpaghetti · 27/01/2007 20:14

We will have 3 loos (if DP pulls his finger out and finishes the work! ).

We debated whether it was worth installing the third one or not but opted for it as its ideal for the children and their friends to use when they are out playing in the garden without treading mud throughout the house (its in the utility room next to the back door).

Not looking forward to the extra cleaning though.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 20:17

Can anyone top four?!

nfb - I do quite like the idea of a separate bathroom and toilet but you don't usually get them in the UK (that I've seen).

I think it's fine if you've got the space bettyspaghetti.

My objection I think is that the limited space in this house could be better utilised.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 27/01/2007 20:21

My mum has 4 loos

downstairs loo
en suite to one of the spare rooms
family bathroom
another en suite

BettySpaghetti · 27/01/2007 20:23

shonaspurtle (love the name BTW!) I agree about the space thing - I've seen a new build 3 bed with 3 toilets which seemed pointless as you were never more than 6 ft from a toilet anywhere in the house!

WideWebWitch · 27/01/2007 20:23

And I WISH we had another shower, often dh is still in the bathroom and I need to use the shower but he's in it. So next house needs 2 showers I reckon (but we both have to leave at similar times with a child each to get to childcare so timing in mornings is key)
