Toilets, toilets everywhere...am I odd in thinking you can have too many

Was looking at the details of a new build house that we might just be able at a stretch to afford today.

Is 3 bed, 1 reception and has 3 toilets!!! Downstairs loo, bathroom upstairs and ensuite in the master bedroom.

Now this is by no stretch of the imagination a big house. Am I alone in thinking that the downstairs loo and the ensuite would have been way more useful as extra room space or big cupboards?

Where is the need for this many toilets? Really?

We have 3 - family bathroom - 1 en suite - 1 downstairs loo. Pain in the arse to clean them all but I have 2 dds and sometimes wish for another

Judy1234 · 27/01/2007 23:44

We have 5 - bath room, downstairs one and 3 en suites but we have 5 children (3 of whom are adults) and often a lot of other children visiting. It's not that unusual for there to be 13 people sleeping here. I think we have slightly more than we need but at least I don't have to clean them!

In about 1972 we moved to a house with 3 loos - envy of the village! One pink, one aqua and one avocado. We were all the rage.

SparklyGothKat · 28/01/2007 01:20

I have 2 in a 4 bed house. That is enough for me to clean, couldn't imagine cleaning 4 or 5 loos

If you think that's bad come to Brasilia, they seem to have an obsession with toilets here. We have a 4 bedroom house with 5 toilets but whilst house hunting we saw a 7 bedroomed house with 12 toilets Most houses here have at least 1 toilet per bedroom plus a 'social' toilet (and a maid to clean them all)

I used to live up North in 4 bed detached, 3 toilets 2 adults - never used the toilet in the ensuite as main bathroom was nearer to my side of the bed.

Now live down south 3 bed 1 bathroom 2 adults 2 kids - still don't want an ensuite but would love a downstairs loo.

I think you are programmed for any nighttime toilets visits required - I once slept in the spare room as I was decorating the main bedroom - I needed to be sick - misjudged the distance to toilet & managed to threw up all over the dog, much to his digust. It would have never happened if I'd had been in my own bed!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 28/01/2007 01:47

We have a 2 bed terrace with 2 toilets. The downstairs one is huge and is literally in the kitchen, with only one door between them!

I am very excited that we have 2 loos in our one story house. The first time I have ever been in charge of more than one...

However, the house I grew up in ended up with 5 - but then it had 4 floors so it wasn't so mad. Much better than when I was a kid and had to creep down the freezing cold, spooky, stairs to the one bathroom at night. we ended up with 3 bathrooms and it was bliss (I had a big new one to myself - has given me delusions of grandeur for ever now)

storey

ProfYaffle · 28/01/2007 06:39

We only have one downstairs loo in a 3 storey house! The attic conversion has only just been finished though and we're planning on having a shower room installed on the 2nd floor at some point, until then the attic will be occupied by the nappy wearers of the house so it doesn't really matter.

Shona, just out of curiosity? who's the builder? I live in a Barratt new build, 3 bed, downstairs loo, main bathroom, ensuite shower. We have 2 receptions though. The shower is fab - it's a mixer and quite powerful. Could never go back to an electric shower now!

LIZS · 28/01/2007 10:58

When we bought our 4 bed, then about 12 years old, the ensuite didn't have a toilet - just the cloakrooma and main bathroom . When we refitted it we squeezed one in and one viewer saw it as a very positive thing to have 3 toilets!! Most new houses we 've seen details of recently have 3 for that size . If you buy off plan you could always ask them to omit it .

shonaspurtle · 28/01/2007 13:17

It's Persimmon, catbaby. Continued trawling last night and we could get a similar sized house in the same area without the ensuite for a good few grand cheaper.

When I say new build actually that's a bit misleading. We'd be probably the second owners. The outskirts of Glasgow are hoaching with new housing schemes and a lot go for fixed price which is a big plus for us with the nightmare Scottish "offers over" system.

We bought our house before it was built. We opted to have two bigger bedrooms (one with a walk in closet) rather than a third bathroom. We have a family bathroom, our ensuite, and a loo downstairs. There are 4 of us. I felt the extra bedroom space was a better use of the area that the tird bathroom would have gone into.

WanderingTrolley · 28/01/2007 14:09

I know a family who have a house with four bedrooms and six loos.

Yet still they are full of shit.

[hmmm]

We have 5 loos - family bathroom, main bedroom ensuite, guest room ensuite, downstairs loo and one in the garage. All get used regularly. Garage one is great for when we are outside in the winter as it means we don't have to take our boots off to go to the loo/wash hands. Our bedroom/bathroom is open plan, with the lo screened rather than being and entirely separate room, so I have designated it a no dumping loo to stop the bedroom smelling - so dh uses the guest room ensuite

Rumpel · 28/01/2007 14:21

You can never have too many toilets in my opinion - wish they had more public ones!
Rubbish only having 1 toilet in the house.

Nightynight · 28/01/2007 15:13

2 is the best number, unless you are a very big household, or unless someone else cleans them.

Hulababy · 28/01/2007 15:18

WE have a 3 bed, 3 storey town house and we have 3 toilets. One of the ground floor - ideal for visitors and also when outside. None of 2st floor, where living room and kitchen are. Two on second floor - our ensuite plus the faimily bathroom. Visitors and DD use the family bathroom. Me and DH, and DD, use the ensuite.

nearlyfourbob · 28/01/2007 21:06

"Our bedroom/bathroom is open plan, with the lo screened rather than being and entirely separate room"

Can't think why whoever designed that bathroom/bedroom thought that was a good idea. I don't blame you for banning dumping.
