Toilets, toilets everywhere...am I odd in thinking you can have too many

Was looking at the details of a new build house that we might just be able at a stretch to afford today.

Is 3 bed, 1 reception and has 3 toilets!!! Downstairs loo, bathroom upstairs and ensuite in the master bedroom.

Now this is by no stretch of the imagination a big house. Am I alone in thinking that the downstairs loo and the ensuite would have been way more useful as extra room space or big cupboards?

Where is the need for this many toilets? Really?

we've got 4. We used to have 5 until recently. Our house used to be a guest house though.

We have 6 toilets, although one is in the cellar and I've never cleaned it!! Having said that, only 4 of us live here!

However, if you're cleaning toilets and have all the cleaning stuff out, it doesn't take much extra time to clean a couple of others!

southeastastra · 27/01/2007 21:01

so many loos! i only have one

bubblerock · 27/01/2007 21:02

We have 5 toilets but none on the ground floor - that's what happens when you live in a soon to be ex Hotel. We only really use 3 of them. We have 3 showers but no bath - I'd love a bath

Catbabymummy · 27/01/2007 21:04

I have the same as the op - 3 loos. Have to admit, don't really use the one in the main bathroom except if dh is in the ensuite. I do like having an ensuite, it means I don't have to bother putting clothes on when I get up to pee in the middle of the nights when we have visitors...

DontlookatmeImshy · 27/01/2007 21:20

3 loos in a 3bed doesn't seem too bad really
-one downstairs
-one in main bathroom
-one in en-suite to master bedroom

I used to think ensuite in a 3-bed was a bit excessive until we had ds and now the though of nothaving to get dressed to go to the loo is hugely appealing.

However some houses on our estate are 2-beds and have an en-suiteand main bathroom. Not quite sure what the point is there. The main bathroom might as well be an en-suite too surely??.

And one house welooked at was 4-beds with a downstairs loo, 3-ensuites!!!!!! AND a main bathroom. Crazy

Impressed by drifter's six!

catsmother · 27/01/2007 21:21

I've got 2, one in the bathroom and one downstairs - in a 4 bed, split level house (very split level .... as it's built on a slope, it has 6 levels, and 5 sets of stairs).

This seems plenty, but would love an en-suite from the showering perspective.

We too looked at a 4 bed new build. The only sort of bed you'd fit in the so-called 4th bedroom was a cot ..... in fact the showhouse had it set up as a study, with a small desk. It too had 4 toilets ...... yet barely any cupboard space, no loft (as that was the "master suite"), a lounge/diner which would have looked crowded as soon as you put anything more than a sofa and a table in it and a "garden" the size of one of the toilets (literally).

Madness.

suedonim · 27/01/2007 21:22

We're looking to move to another apartment which has five loos. Each of the three bedrooms has a full ensuite bathroom and there's also a cloakroom. The last loo is in the staff quarters, where we will house the steward who will clean said water closets!

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 21:26

3 baths to clean is even worse than 3 loos !!!

nikkie · 27/01/2007 21:28

We only have one, used to have 2 but had one knocked down and a bathroom built in its place, and had the other bathroom made into a bedroom.

I hate this one/two toilet crap in the UK.

My idea of heaven is a 3 bed w/3 bathrooms and downstairs loo.

HATE having only one toilet.

My house in Denver had a downstairs loo and two full baths upstairs - each ensuite w/the two bedrooms.

twelveyeargap · 27/01/2007 21:42

We have a downstairs loo - very useful. Two beds and office on first floor and a family bathroom; three beds on second floor with another family sized bathroom. We just bought the place and I've lost count of the number of people who have said, "ooh, lovely big master bedroom you have there - you could easily put in an ensuite". Errr, WHY? Not sure why the obsession people have with ensuites. I find it really irritating (having lived in places with ensuites) when DH goes to the loo in the ensuite in the middle of the night. Stupid extractor fan whirrs on, then the loo flushes, toilet fills up... I lie awake fuming for 30 minutes. Pointless, IMO!

sweetkitty · 27/01/2007 22:06

Our house is a new build 3 bed detached and we have 3 loos, en-suite, downstairs loo and family bathroom. Downstairs loo has been brilliant for potty training DD1. To be honest I think I have used the actual toilet in the bathroom about 3 times in over a year, I only use that room to bath the DDs in every night, I've had about 3 baths in a year as well (I stink!)

I can see the benefits when the LOs are older and using the toilet all the time and also for teenagers. It's nice DP and I having our own loo full of our stuff instead of hundreds of bath toys etc

fruitful · 27/01/2007 22:09

Exactly, 12yrgap. We have an ensuite that we don't use at night - because if you turn the light on, the extractor fan whirrs for ages, and if you flush, the toilet gurgles for ages. Also, my side of the bed is actually closer to the main bathroom than to the ensuite.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 22:25

Expat - this is the opinion of all Americans I know. What is it about all these bathrooms that you love though?

Is it not sharing the bathroom with anyone else? Not having to wait to use the toilet EVER? What?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 27/01/2007 22:35

Not having to wait to use a loo.

Having your own space to lay out all your stuff and not share it with anyone else's stuff - cuz I'm a beauty product whore and have a lot of stuff.

Not having to go up or down a flight of stairs to get to a loo.

Being able to shower at the same time.

Guests have their own bathroom.

LOTS of reasons.

In fact, if we were ever to buy a house, it would HAVE to be a new build because anything older isn't going to have enough bathrooms.

shonaspurtle · 27/01/2007 22:47

Ok, I'll give you the more than one shower thing. That would make my life better.

expatinscotland · 27/01/2007 22:50

When you have teens, it makes things soooooo much easier.

Dinosaur · 27/01/2007 22:52

We have two loos, but given that neither DS1 nor DH will use the upstairs loo, and that DS1 spends 45+ minutes in there every evening, I sometimes think that we could do with three...

Jennster · 27/01/2007 23:08

We have a loo in our cellar, and a loo in our family bathroom on 1st floor. We did have an outside loo, but we got rid of that, and are looking to have an ensuite built on our 3rd bedroom in the attic. It's a pain in the bum to have (drunk) guests switching lights on, bumping downstairs, going to the loo and leaving the lights on all through the night.

losty · 27/01/2007 23:17
