not sure if there is an easier way but you can do it by pressing ctrl E and adjsuting the width and height of the page that way.

When you are left with the white border, do the same as you did for cutting, around the picture but press copy. Then cut it, then paste - I think

If you look at the very edge of the white bit, you'll see a little black square. Grab it with your mouse pointer and drag the edges in.
