My brother is thinking of training as a CAD designer, hasn't done much until now workwise and he is almost 40. Do you anybody who does this? What sort of training did they do?

Hiya I don't know how much help I am (or not as is probably the case!) I used to work with lots of CAD designers and they generally had a lot of training/been to uni/architecture etc etc.

Has he done any kind of surveying/engineering/architecture before?

It may be simpler to get into than I'm thinking but that was generally the line of work my guys were in

dp work with CAD, he actually did a HND in megatronics and then learnt on the job, is retraining in another package though that he thinks will open up more lucrative job offers as the pay can be peanuts for a cad operator, I will ask him what it is.

There is no way he can do a degree at this stage, I think he was thinking more about a 1 year course. He has decided that now he is 40 he should get himself a career and forget the dancing, kissing girls etc.

right have been back and asked him, dp says thathe started doing an apprentice to me a shhetmetal worker and designer which took 5 years, he then did a design and guild in CAD and then went on to do a HNDin mechatronics (not megatronics sorry!). He then got his job and is now re training in inventor.

Dp says it depends if he wants to be a designer or opertar, to be an operator he only needs to know how to use CAD and will stsrt on about 18K but to be a designer he will need to understand the materials he is working with and will therefore need an engineering background.

I think the CAD city and guilds is only a one year course.

18k is lots for sombody like my brother...will have to pass this on.

Don't know your brother but 18K is not a bad wage for somoene with a one year qualification, particulalry up north but it can be limiting later on.

I suppose he can maybe get more money later on, if he does more courses....anything that gets him away from the girls and the drugs.
