Family Tree Software ... can you recommend a good one please?

I know there are genealogists here ... my father has finally given me the family tree details (and it goes back to 1400s) .. I would love to get a professional looking one done for him

I'm looking for software that has flexibility so that I can choose different branches and end people to focus on (gifts for all the family)

It needs to be able to deal with multiple levels .. both across and up and down .. as well as going back that many years (on both sides of my dad... mothers and fathers) it logs all the children and most people had more than 5 .. eek

any recommendations please? >. don't mind buying it

I use Family Tree Maker and it is excellent. If you want to use it with ancestry.co.uk it is designed for the job - you can enter details and then press a button and it will search ancestry for more info (as long as you have a subscription with them of course...)

It's available in all sorts of packages, but I got it from these people S&N Genealogy Supplies who seemed to be the best value and delivered very quickly.

You can get free versions of software too - there is PAF from FamilySearch (scroll down to the bottom right hand corner).

Thanks

I don't know much about this .. but is that not the find and source type ..I only want to transpose data that I'm fortunate enough to have been given

I want the software to draw the pretty pictures and lets me print them out looking like something worth framing rather than just an excel spread sheet ... is this still the right one .. I think my dad would like an 'aged' looking one .. I saw a nice one with a faded 'oak tree' in background but it only went 6 lines back

It'll do both - lovely charts, start with who you want at the top/bottom, how many generations you want, choose the colours/borders of your boxes, background pictures etc etc. If you wanted at some point to do more research then it would already be in an easy format to continue.
