Can anyone tell me are private hire taxis actually cheaper than black cabs.

Car is awaiting major surgery and I have checked the bus times and I will have to wait an hour in the town centre for a bus home after scouts tonight, don't fancy hanging about with 2 kids freezing cold and lots of drunk office workers. So I will have to get a taxi home.

impossible to tell - costs vary so much with minicabs

are you in london? if you know and trust a local firm i'd get a quote from one and book in advance

if in any doubt (re safety etc) book a black cab in advance (e.g. datacab) but it's more £££

No small town in Scotland. I was going to book a cab to pick us up outside scouts but it is a presentation night so might run on. Plenty black cab stances nearby but don't want to pay over the odds, doesn't help that my mobile is dead so I can't phone a cab when we come out.

Oh and I phoned taxi firms. One private one says £12 other £8 but rough estimate only and black cab said about £13.

Can another scout mum give your DSs a lift? (I'm wondering where you live now, as I also live in a Scottish town and have scouts tonight...) Are you within a 10 mile radius of Glasgow?

Mrs Muddle No I'm not that near to Glasgow .
No other scouts live out where we are, plus I will have DD in tow so they would need a people carrier (mind you most of thm seem to have them). Resigned to having to get a taxi home, no buses to MIL's either within the hour.
