unusual name ideas

Since lots of people responding to Metrobaby's thread say their child has an unusual name, how about pooling ideas so as to help those in future searching for inspiration?

As a starter (and as a way of maintaining privacy): here is a link that has got ds's name in it, and a version of dd's.

oops the misleadingness of the passive ... "those were deemed" was a polite way of saying "I was roundly told that". Only implication I intended in my post was that it's a lovely name (and I still think so).

Actually it was Robin that was supposed to be "wet" (again don't agree but hey), problem w/ Catriona was apparently that no-one who isn't Scottish can pronounce it. Now is that true?

My son is called Liam Matthew and my daughter is called Nikita Jane.
I also like 4 a girl: Elise,Ella,Erika, yes I had a fad with the E but hubby named our Daughter.
4 a boy Cory,Jacob,David.
NOT VERY UNUSAL BUT SIMPLE

Fintan and Finian

Janh · 19/05/2004 09:23

binkie, I think English people tend to say Ca-tri-oh-na, with the emphasis on the oh - the Scots pronunciation is Ca-tree-onner with the emphasis on the tree? (Or even just Catrina, I'm never sure!)

Anyway however you wanted it pronounced some people would say it differently. (My cousin is called Yvonne, pronounced the French way, but sometimes gets the equivalent of 'eave-on-your-knickers-your-mother's-coming!)

A friend of a friend is called Scholastica. I think her family's German or something.

niceglasses · 19/05/2004 09:50

aka Lazyeye - registration mess-up on my part

Another vote for Finn here if this one is boy no3. Otherwise I'm stuck for boys having used up favs on first two. I was keen on Alfie as also my Dads name but now with Alfie Moon....

Girls - umm. Nancy,Eddie My Nana was Dianh(think thats how you spell it or is it Dinah?) which I quite like.

spacemonkey · 19/05/2004 09:52

my ds was called alfie for the first 2 weeks of his life but i got cold feet about him having to live with it for the rest of his life so we changed his name to Guy

Janh · 19/05/2004 10:11

Ooh, Dinah, haven't heard that for a while! (Used to be a song "someone's in the kitchen with Dinah".) There's a Nancy of about 17 working in our Sainsbos - very nice girl.

sm, I did that with Charlie - I mean I never actually called him it but decided (wrongly!) that it didn't pass the Sainsburys test, in fact there are loads of them about and they're all good at football, darn it.

My daughters have what would be thought of as 'boring' names - they are Katherine and Rachel. But they have more unusual middle names - Katherine Morna and Rachel Jessie (after my Gran). For ds it is the other way round - his first name is Aidan (more unusual, at least for us and our family) but his middle names are Paul Russell, very standard!!

Here's some name sites which have some more unusual names:

greek names (the site has Indian, African etc sections too, but I like the greek ones)

This site is quite good for unusual names with their meanings zoope

This one tells you how many babies were called your choice of name in the UK last year how popular is your name?

Fennel · 19/05/2004 10:38

ok crap links, sorry about that!

The first is www.babynameworld.com/greek.asp but doesn't seem to be working today.

the second should be just www.zoope.com
I linked it straight to dd3's name there!

and the third is www.bounty.co.uk but I tried to link it directly to the Search baby names bit.

slug · 19/05/2004 10:41

DH rejected the following on the grounds that they are too unusual, though obviously not in NZ where they are common enough.
GIRLS
Ngaire (the sluglet's middle name) pronounced Nyree
Ngio
Te Aroha
Waimarama
BOYS
Tama
Hemi (James)

Fennel · 19/05/2004 10:45

Another try to my favourite site, the one which tells how many babies were called this last year in the UK

here

marialuisa · 19/05/2004 10:52

Have found out that DD is the only girl in the UK to have been given "her" name in the past 5 years! Wow, it really is unusual.

spacemonkey · 19/05/2004 10:58

wow i am amazed to see my name is no 24 on the most popular girls names list!

it's Amelia btw

Hulababy · 19/05/2004 11:01

Well in Sheffield there were 26 called Mollie (like my DD) but 112 called Molly. That was last year though. Dd was registered the year before that.

niceglasses · 19/05/2004 11:01
