unusual name ideas

Since lots of people responding to Metrobaby's thread say their child has an unusual name, how about pooling ideas so as to help those in future searching for inspiration?

As a starter (and as a way of maintaining privacy): here is a link that has got ds's name in it, and a version of dd's.

Some pretty names there, Binkie. I always thought Demelza was pretty when I heard it on Poldark.

Flip · 17/05/2004 18:19

I like Darcy for a boy but dh wouldn't even concider it. Along with Marshall and Codie. So we settled for Matthew Joseph and James Dylan.

Nutcracker · 17/05/2004 18:32

Had a friend at school called Demelza and her sister was called Lamorna (may be spelt wrong).

Janh · 17/05/2004 18:41

Winston Graham invented Demelza as a girl's name - it was only a place name before he borrowed it. It is very pretty.

He also borrowed Warleggan from a place, and a few other characters, I believe. (I was a big Poldark fan, can you tell!)

Tinker · 17/05/2004 18:44

Lamorna is a place name in Cornwall as well.

Janstar · 17/05/2004 19:03

Oh Jan, Robin Ellis was soooo sexy, wasn't he!

Janh · 17/05/2004 19:07

I used to swoon every week, Janstar! Not sure if it was the voice or the scar...or the masterful manner...or the horse!

Metrobaby · 17/05/2004 19:14

Binkie - I like the names in that link. Some very unusual names in there that sound lovely.

fisil · 17/05/2004 19:35

I like a lot of those names.

Here is a link which includes ds's unusual name I like Zadoc - wish I'd chosen that!

Flip · 17/05/2004 19:39

Bastian is a little to risky.

Tinker · 17/05/2004 19:39

Spotted Varney on that link fisil - I'm afraid I would alwasy think of On The Buses' Stan (hope that's not your son's name!)

Tinker · 17/05/2004 19:40

I mean Reg - what am I thinking of?

fisil · 17/05/2004 19:44

sorry I missed that, Tinker, I was just putting Varney to bed. What were you saying?

Paula71 · 17/05/2004 22:41

Fisil, my ds twin1's name is there, third one in from the rightside of the screen under N. It was DHs choice too!

It means champion! I worry that ds twin2 will find his name too plain but I chose that as it has personal meaning.

The site is good as you can type in a meaning and find relevant names. I love the name Ivo for a boy now!

And if that doesn't work it is www.behindthename.com

Why I am I so technouseless!

collision · 17/05/2004 22:56

Have always loved the name Jude....even before Jude Law and would def call my baby Jude if DH would let me......but he wont!!

spacemonkey · 17/05/2004 23:16

gosh i wanted to BE demelza

poldark was great wasn't it!

sammac · 17/05/2004 23:18

When I had ds, baby boy opposite was called Jude, over 2 years ago. Everyone recognises it, but still quite original.

Janh · 18/05/2004 09:33

collision, "Hey Jude" was written for Julian Lennon - who was known as Jude, presumably - you could call the baby Julian and then gradually introduce Jude as a pet name...

sm, I would have liked to be Demelza too (or Angharad Rees, I thought she was gorgeous, whatever happened to her?)

musica · 18/05/2004 09:56

Followed one of those links, and found these suggestions for multiples.....can't imagine anyone using Ireland/Holland for twin girls, Justin and Dustin for twin boys, Brandy/Sherry, or my personal favourite, for 5 - Terry, Sherry, Barry, Mary, Kerry!

I tried for Zadoc ("it's a good biblical name dear" didn't get anywhere.

toddlerbob · 18/05/2004 10:09

Didn't really want that winkie, but hey, owt for nowt; bring a bucket as my mum used to say.

binkie · 18/05/2004 11:06

whisper: I really like Petrok (hmm better as Petroc) - there's a Radio 3 chap called Petroc Trelawney who's the only person in the world with a more Cornish name than ds

My brother named his son Bon scott after the lead singer of AC/DC who died.
He gets called Bon for short but also gets the mickey taken out of him at school as he is 15 now and its sounds daft!!
