unusual name ideas

Since lots of people responding to Metrobaby's thread say their child has an unusual name, how about pooling ideas so as to help those in future searching for inspiration?

As a starter (and as a way of maintaining privacy): here is a link that has got ds's name in it, and a version of dd's.

Glancing at our 'to think about' list before DS was born, it includes (mix of boys and girls) Tuli, Tala, Jaf, Effie, Finlo, Thalia, Patou, Kassimeer, Cassia, Kalika, Billie (girl) Milo, Hope, Linus, Kalinda, Shiv, Pasha.

Best to think about names before preg-head takes hold, perhaps.....

manna · 18/05/2004 12:02

here's a list of my friends baby names - all in the last three years!

Corisande
Gabriel
Isaac
Noah
Jonah
Soloman
Jedidiah
Ethan
Trinity
Constance
Sid
Alfie
Lola
Fleur
Phoebe
Elsa
Harvey - and that's just off the top of my head! what happened to the trad. ones? I go to a gym in Notting Hill, and you should see the signing in book at the creche - it makes this list look tame!

manna · 18/05/2004 12:03

oh, and 2 thalias, and a couple of reubens

noddy5 · 18/05/2004 12:58

wanted to call ds Elvis but dp strongly objected and so agreed on jesse

Piffleoffagus · 18/05/2004 12:59

our next baby if a boy will be called Thadius prob as old family name... Tady for short...

lou33 · 18/05/2004 16:32

Thalia is Greek isn't it? I used to know a Greek woman who called one of hers that, am sure she said it was.

Piffleoffagus · 18/05/2004 16:54

the name Tahdius comes from the irish side fo our family but of its origins I am unsure, see as I named our dd, very suddenly on my own without asking dh, he gets first bags on the next one,.. no doubt when times comes for naming I will investigate more thoroughly and tell him I prefer Finn or Noah

eddm · 18/05/2004 17:01

I went to school with a Thalia but have never met any others ... maybe the mothers were all at school with her too!

SoupDragon · 18/05/2004 17:02

I love Finn but wanted a name that could be shortened to Finn rather than Finn itself and couldn't fid one I liked.

bundle · 18/05/2004 17:03

know 2 thalias. and 2 meriels.
oh and a spike

cazzybabs · 18/05/2004 17:04

I want Noah or Jacob or Sebastian if we have a boy - dp says if I have any of them he would leave me! Think if its a boy it will be plain boring William

I like Freya or Grace or Tess for a girl.

Girl's names are much easier!

sponge · 18/05/2004 17:08

We have a friend who named their son Tiger (which she now puts down to pregnancy hormones!) and there's a little girl called Damaris at dd's nursery.

bundle · 18/05/2004 17:12

a friend from surrey knows of a girl who's called Electra (wonder if she has a complex..fnar)

binkie · 18/05/2004 17:14

As to what happened to trad. names (to answer Manna in a way) I'd always wanted Robin (for a boy) and Catriona but when it came to it those were deemed boring and wet. I was offered (ds) Godrevy and Josiah, and (dd) Viva and Hebe, so we compromised.

I've just named my baby girl Apple. Joke! Actually, I do know a girl called Summer and another girl called Autumn. The strange thing is that neither of them were born in their respect season. I also know a girl called Easter - who was born on Easter. . .

Paula71 · 18/05/2004 21:12

There are loads of little girls called Demi around here. But it isn't pronounced like I hear Demi Moores name being pronounced on TV. Instead it is not D'mee but Deh-meh.

I do like the full version of the name though, Demetria, I don't think any of them are really called that though.

lars · 18/05/2004 21:19

i really like Larissa, Alana, Ashton, my neice has a very unsual name Zarrette. larsxx

Janh · 18/05/2004 21:20

soupie, malmomum's Finn was called Finnbar (Finbar?) - would that have done you?

Our boys are Joe (Sunday name Joseph) and Sam (Samuel) but honestly, if I was having a boy now - which would be a major miracle in itself!!! - I think I would go for Max or Jacob or Leo.

SoupDragon · 18/05/2004 21:43

Sadly not "Finbar Saunders and his double entendres". Too much sneaking a look at DHs copies of Viz in our youthful pre children days . And Finlay reminds me of someone we met on our honeymoon.

Janh · 18/05/2004 21:45

ooo, soupie, had forgotten about him, sorry.

I love Viz, makes me snigger uncontrollably!

Janh · 18/05/2004 21:47

The interwebular home of Britain's 4th favourite humour magazine - what can you say?

fisil · 18/05/2004 22:13

soupie - I've got one - ds's name can be shortened to Finn! But we don't shorten it (yet). He gets called Finnie at nursery sometimes, which I think is very cute.

fisil · 18/05/2004 22:14

and he isn't Finbar or Finlay.

Soulfly · 18/05/2004 22:17

I'd like to tell you my kids names but i don't want to put them on here, shame cause my dd is unusal

eddm · 18/05/2004 22:38

My sister is a Catriona and if she heard you implying that her name was wet you'd find out that she isn't! Bolshy, forceful, confident yes, wet, no!
