Learning to drive hell

I'm in my mid 30s and having driving lessons.

I need some perspective on whether it is going ok or if I should give up now...

I think I have had 6 lessons and have no previous driving experience - we're driving places but I just feel so stupid the whole time. Every lesson includes at least 1 mistake that requires instructor intervention either with steering or because I did something wrong.

I'm used to being able to do stuff and this is making me feel like an incompetent idiot.

Is that normal???

this is normal!

it can take 30-40 hours of lessons to get good enough, plus it's harder the older you get too.

if you're really struggling, and you think it is a co-ordination thing, consider automatic: My friend struggled for two years ignoring my advice - he finally went over to automatic, he sailed through! he found, because he had fewer things to concentrate on :)

also, you don't have to stay with you instructor - find another one for just one lesson and see how you get on :)

Thanks! It's very hard to know if you are a totally hopeless case or not!
Gears are fine I think. My brain is just a bit slow.

My instructor seems alright but I guess trying someone else for a lesson wouldn't hurt.

Tbh I think I'm just used to being a successful-ish human being and usually pick things up pretty quickly in normal life....and this has thrown me in to a world of hideous pain. Which I probably can cope with if that's normal....
