Take your point about poverty. We are shielded quite well from absolute poverty in the West (thank goodness!)
Heard the story first in the world service and they added there are reports, the child wasn't even hers, so possibly kidnap?

Reports like this are very upsetting. I think it's because we can't imagine what's going in- it's literally the stuff of fairy tales and nightmares.
