Using mobile phone while driving --Rant !

Why are so many people still driving while talking on a hand held mobile phone?
I had some idiot woman pull out of a junction straight in front of me on the way back from the station last night. I had to brake sharply and hooted her like mad - she gave me the finger. The reason she pulled out in front of me was she couldn't turn her bloody head far enough to look to see if a car was coming from her left as she had the phone tucked between chin and shoulder.
And this morning some other to**er in front of me was driving at about 15 miles an hour while talking on a mobile. When I hooted him he finally pulled over - then shouted "stupid bitch" at me.
In both cases I felt like I was the one in the wrong.
What is the matter with these people ????

They are stupid.

crumpet · 13/05/2004 11:23

Just have to hope they get pulled over at some stage now that it's against the law

CookieMonster · 13/05/2004 11:27

this is a subject that really really makes my blood boil ... are the police still just giving warnings or are they actually fining people now? I see people every single day on the phone - I think they stopped doing it for a while when the law first came in but they just think they can get away with it. grrrrrrr

Kayleigh · 13/05/2004 15:41

and the silly cow last night had a child in a baby seat in the back of the car. I mean how stupid is she. If my reactions had been slower i would have gone straight into her side.

Idiots!
Surely the safety of your child and yourself is more important than ANYONE on the end of a phone!!

Tinker · 13/05/2004 15:50

Oh, oh, oh, this is my absolute pet hate! Really want a flashing light on my car that says 'GET OFF YOUR F*ING PHONE YOU SELFISH TO$$ER' that I can switch on when I see these people.

eddm · 13/05/2004 17:52

Mine too! Morons. I do have to restrain dh from answering his phone when he's driving - he knows perfectly well people can leave a message, why does he start hunting for the phone?
Further pet hates include motorists who complain about moves to enforce the laws relating to no left turns/box junctions. Is it their divine right to run me over?

libb · 13/05/2004 18:23

Its one of my bugbears when it comes to driving too - I work for the Magistrates Court and it sometimes gives me a little buzz to reminding people of the law after the incident, especially when they phone with that attitude you describe Kayleigh! (just remember, they are wrong and you are right). Great examples have been in various conversations where stroppy driver phones demanding to know why he/she has to go straight to court instead of being offered a fine, "umm, because you were going 106mph in a 30mph speed limit?" just don't do it, you stupid muppets!

(me, hormonal? no way)

mummytojames · 13/05/2004 18:28

i think apart from mobiles another one that gets to me is women who think its safe to apply makeup while driving everytime my dad sees it he shout bl**dy women drivers to which i ha to remind him im a woman driver and were not all the same just came back from spain and its still legal to talk on the phone while driving must lern spainish for you f idiot

MeanBean · 13/05/2004 22:23

God, how can it be legal? Don't you have to have full control of the car in Spain? In England, it has ALWAYS been illegal to hold a mobile phone - or a banana - or a fag - or a mascara brush - while drving, as you are supposed to be in full control of the car while driving and that means both hands on the steering wheel unless you are changing gears.

Or am I wrong?

beansprout · 13/05/2004 22:27

Totally agree with everyone. I despise people who put the rest of us at risk for the sake of a phone call or bit of bloody make up. Drink drivers scare the life out of me though as at least the other types can be spotted and we can steer clear.

I don't even like driving on weekend nights and over xmas as I am convinced that is when all the stoopids are out in their cars!

dottee · 13/05/2004 22:41

I'm so tempted to take registration numbers when I see people using mobile phones whilst driving but it always seems to be just me in the car and my memory ain't what it used to be. Has anyone else 'shopped' these people? My DP says you can do as long as you take a note of the time because the police can check the mobile phone networks.

I agree ... I have always hated seeing people using the phone whilst driving and hand on my heart, have never done so myself because I've been unable to master the 'art', even when I drove an automatic car!

mummytojames · 13/05/2004 22:46

sorry meanbean had to come of for a while yeah i know its stupid but the laws in spain aint that strong in the way of motorist i tell you those people make me laugh if they run you over but dont kill you they can sue you for damages even on there zebra crossing unless theres a sign stateing it

Levanna · 13/05/2004 23:03

Today a lady pulled out in front of me - she had been stationary, at the kerb, and I was part of the moving traffic - because she was still putting on her lippy and obviously hadn't bothered to look!
Not a mobile exactly, but another distraction!

suedonim · 14/05/2004 17:06

The Scots must be more law abiding than most as they seem to have taken heed of the new law. I've only seen people on phones a few times since it was introduced.

But what about people who smoke when they're driving? How do they light a fag, what do they do with it if they need both hands or there's an emergency?

dogwalker · 14/05/2004 17:37

This is one of my pet hates too. Many times I have been standing at a local pelican crossing which is on a crossroads, with the children, cars try to get through and block the pelican, often they are on the phone and when you stare at them or signal for them to get off it they act like they've done nothing wrong. W**ers!

eidsvold · 15/05/2004 06:58

This is one of my all time hates - I shout at people to get off their phone if I see them... dh hates it when I do though. However I figure I am fighting a lost cause when I see a police officer in a marked car dricing erratically through our village WHY? cause he is talking on his mobile phone. Plenty of places to pull over and talk but no lets just keep driving.

eidsvold · 15/05/2004 07:01

Kayleigh - I had a woman fail to give way on a mini roundabout even though I was almost through it - ( no way she could have failed to see me) I slammed on my brakes and tooted the horn ( little car, weedy horn) and she turned and called me a F bitch - no matter that she would have wiped out my daughter.

The matter with people like that is - they could not care less about anyone else - including their own children - their needs are paramount and as far as they are concerned the sooner we learn our place the better their lives will be.

Hulababy · 15/05/2004 09:55

One of my bug bears too. It is just all so unneccasry. I mean hands free kits are available so easily and so cheaply, there really in no need to be handling a phone at all. Most new phones have voice activated dialing, and one touchh answer on the hands free.

I really do wish more was done about this, and other stuff like smoking and eating when driving. If you don't have two hands ready then you can't stop safely fast.

tallulah · 15/05/2004 10:21

I still see people driving while using the phone every single day & I've never seen anyone get stopped for it. What is the point of a law that isn't enforced?
