Can I make a bit of a plea to those of you who enjoy posting upsetting stories?

Can you please NOT put the subject of the shocking tale in the title?

Can you just put "An upsetting news story concerning children" or something similar?

Because I'm all for asking MN Towers to have a "Without In The News" button because I hate hate hate hearing about the terrible things that people do to babies and children and I don't want to see thread titles like that.

If that makes me blinkered, etc, then so be it.

Also, why do people feel the need to post links to stuff like this when it's just for people to go "oh how sad" to? I can understand if it's a policy thing, or there's a campaign that needs to be undertaken - but just for people to feel sad? Why?

dara · 29/11/2006 20:19

I also think the poster should at least try to explain what is in the story, why they have posted it and what they think.

rubbernecker · 29/11/2006 20:20

Socci - its a phrase coined from people slowing down to gawp at road traffic accidents. (ie, from facing forward and driving past they slow down, brake and their eyes stay fixed on the incident - increasing the likelyhood of more accidents and hold ups).

hulababy · 29/11/2006 20:21

Whilst I completely agree that there is no need to have shocking headlines on the thread title, I do see a need for the In The News forum, and for people to be able to talk about stories that have shocked or upset them. Some people may have read or heard a story that has bothered them and need an outlet to talk about it with someone. I have no problem with this at all.

rubbernecker · 29/11/2006 20:21

And i still havent changed my name back pmsl!

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 29/11/2006 20:21

Ok I hear what you're saying but who are you to decide how anyone else should design their thread simply because you can't handle seeing it - nicely!!!? Just because something isn't pleasing to your eye doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed. This is a global forum open to all - some people want to recognise and open up lines of discussion about these things and some don't - its your choice to go into it or not. There might be people out there who think people should be stopped from openly abusing and swearing at people but again thats stopping freedom of speech etc one of the things I love about this place!!

i recently started a threadon 'in the news but my subject line was not offensive at all i dont thinks so anyway it was quite simply poor little girl, it was a matter close to my heart and to send thoughts and prayers to the family but i understand where people are coming from with subject line that are too revealing, some are way to blunt and give out toomuch information if you dont like hearing about these things

handlemecarefully · 29/11/2006 20:23

Will do Cod...

Rosey pink ....., bless him he likes to move with the times then

laneydaye · 29/11/2006 20:23

dont think a bunch of mn'ers should decide what others would like to talk about sad or otherwise..
dont read the thread if you dont like it.

rubbernecker · 29/11/2006 20:24

Its not about aesthetics!!!!

AitchTwoOh · 29/11/2006 20:28

the thing that gets me is that it's always the same people doing the 'the mother's a selfish bitch/ doesn't deserve children/ i'd kill my DP is he touched my kiddies/ mental illness is no excuse/ i have a child that age and i could never do that' and my particular favourite from the now-departed Cowmad on one particularly out-of-control thread... 'why didn't they give him to me? i would of had the baby. i would have loved him'. and a number of people agreed that yes, they too 'would of had him'. how would they have got him? are they foster parents? most infuriating.

there is most certainly a difference between exploring the reasons why a deplorable crime may have been committed (human nature to talk about these things, i think) and just forming a disorderly queue of inarticulate tut-tutters. (apols to Tutter)

"Don't read the thread if you don't like it" or words to that effect - well, if the thread title is "baby dies in fire, really bad burns all over, poor little mite, then a crocodile came and ate his sister, disembowelled all over her bedroom she was" it doesn't really leave that much to the imagination, does it?

And when the OP is just a link to said charred child and guts all over thread and a sad face, it's hardly a discussion that's wanted - is it?!

Could you change your name to PhenominalInternetTyrantHunkerYuletidemunker?

HunkerTheInternetPhenomenon · 02/12/2006 12:40

No, because you've spelt phenomenal incorrectly, and that would never do for a pedant such as myself (I wasn't happy with ItsTheThoughtThatCounts really - there was no apostrophe in its and it jarred somewhat ).

MerryChristmasfromQV · 02/12/2006 12:42

Thats exactly why i want to be able to call you PITHY

Can you switch msn on for 2 secs......? my email not working

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 02/12/2006 13:13

Don't you read the papers or watch the news? So there are distressing stories in them, no? And then you might discuss them with people you know.

It's no different imo.

I wish I could block the breast and bottle feeding category cos the titles on there really get on my tits but it's not really up to me to make the rules is it?

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 13:24

In fact, GDG, I would not discuss distressing stories with people I knew were suffering from PND, for example.
I also wouldn't tell horrific stories of abused babies or prenatal deaths to people who were pregnant.
Basically, no, if I knew it was going to make someone cry, I wouldn't.

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 02/12/2006 13:26

But on an internet forum you can't possibly account for every single possible mood or state of mind can you? So many things posted have the potential to upset or offend somebody. You just have to not open the thread if you think it's going to upset you. You can't start telling people what to post and what not to post.

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 13:28

AAargh - no of course you can't.
But you can title your threads so that the very title is not going to upset people.
That's all the OP asked for.

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 02/12/2006 13:28

Oh agree with sensitivity within the title though.
