Since having two holidays in France last two years and bringing back vast amounts of wine we have got in habit of sharing a bottle most nights and often more . Looks like there are a few wine drinkers out there how much do you consume . I think I might be catching up from 36 months of pregnancy and the same again breastfeeding

Ummm, DH and I will drink 2/3 bottles a night at weekends (Fri and Sat). It's very occassional that we will have more than a glass or 2 midweek.

Piffleoffagus · 11/05/2004 11:34

until recently we would have a can of beer and then a bottle of wine, weekends even more, thankfully we have stopped and my goodness how much lighter I feel every day, I have tons more energy!
It has been a long time since we got through one day without a drink if not several though, that scares me a bit! No withdrawal symptoms though!

mambo · 11/05/2004 11:40

I'm knackered all the time and very rarely I am good and have water or camomile tea and I feel less groggy in the morning but more often than not by 7pm a nice glass of wine is very alluring. Also if your dh is away or out do you stil have a drink. My mum lives alone and has wine most nights with evening meal but I have friend who only drinks when kids in bed and never if dh is out.

eeekk Same here.

Sometimes a scotch or beer to start and a bottle of wine during the week, more at weekends. We tried having no wine in the house and not buying wine when we shop.. didn't work, just ended up buying it on the way home from the station instead!!

I do worry sometimes that we drink too much, and now and again we really make an effort not to drink during the week, but it rarely lasts more than one night. I'm sure a couple of glasses of wine can't hurt that much.. I think the stress of not having it would be worse.

Miriam2 · 11/05/2004 11:49

I agree, there's nothing more relaxing than sitting down with that first glass of wine and thinking...'Phew..' We try not to drink early in the week, but surprising how often the 'weekend' begins on a Wednesday!

bootsmonkey · 11/05/2004 11:52

Until recently, I would grab a can on return from work (6ish) and then split a bottle with DH on the evening. Am trying to be v. good tho as did get a bit concerned by the amount (& cost)and now have a glass after DD goes to bed. Have lost 1/2 stone by giving up cider which is a bonus. V. rare I don't have a drink at all and yes that includes when DH is out.

I never used to drink mid week before parenthood (more of a demon binge drinker) and couldn't face it during the first 12 months after DD was born, but making up for it now

mambo · 11/05/2004 11:58

BR we tried not buying it and that worked a little bit especially because we were renting farmhouse in middle of nowhere but moved in March and now have wine rack in spitting distance -that didn't influence us really

Like you DH and I started sharing a bottle of wine most evenings following our first holiday in france - as we have had 2 more holidays since this has jy=ust carried on and on...
We have stopped very recently due to me suddenly looking in the mirror, standing on the scales and rearlising that I weigh more now than I did 2 weeks after DD2 was born!! - all down to the wine.....
Still share 2 bottles (max) over a weekend. Occasionally have a glass midweek. I didn't find it as hard as I've done in the past BUT that was to do with how fed up of myself I've become!!

mambo · 11/05/2004 12:07

I'd like to loose maybe 1/2 to 1 stone. Cutting down on alcohol seems the easiset way to get started I suppose without going on faddy diet. But it is hard especiallly when cooking nice tea-like tonight i'm making moussaka and a glass of red wine would be lovely with it!

DH is making me have at least 2 nights off a week. As I have a bottle-a-night habit this is v good for my health but v bad for my temper.

NB Red wine, not gin.

I try to stick to one glass, or possibly two, and keep it to that (ie don't start till quite late). I have to admit that if I don't drink AT ALL I feel massively better the next day.

Been drinking much too much in the past week...the problem is that nice booze is so, well, nice. And I don't get out much.

Janh · 11/05/2004 12:21

I don't get out much either, MI. (Well, where would I go? Would stand outside pubs all night going will I get a seat? will we be able to hear each other? etc as in middleaged mummery thread).

Don't get hangovers - just total inertia and longing to lie down all day!

Had you thought about getting nasty wine instead?

mambo · 11/05/2004 12:25

I don't get out much either but I do get horrific hangovers if I drink beer and then wine. I'm sort of bent double all day and feel like vomiting if I stand up straight . Of course this is extreme and would never happen on school day!

This is a very inspiring thread I'm now determined to graduate from all week to mid week

bunnyrabbit · 11/05/2004 14:14

OK. I will not have wine tonight..... or any other alcohol.. promise.

BR

motherinferior · 11/05/2004 14:28

I suppose I could get back in touch with the friend who used to bring round absolutely revolting home-made wine, couldn't I. A sure-fire way to abstinence.

DP is a great believer in a Nice Glass of Wine. And, annoyingly, can do moderate boozing without getting trolleyed.

magnum · 11/05/2004 14:29

Nice to hear so many others enjoy the odd bottle of wine as much as I do. Tend to have red wine most evenings. Usually have a glass with my evening meal (doesn't even have to be a nice meal, it goes just as well with fish & chips) After dd in bed I'll have another one or two glasses. Have tried to give up but I have recently given up smoking and feel I deserve something to relax me. I've heard red wine is really good for your health and in one hospital a doctor was giving his heart patients two glasses a day. Who can argue with that

sandyballs · 11/05/2004 14:37

I'm convinced that parenthood makes you drink.
I drink more now than I ever did - it just seems so nice when the girls are in bed, toys put away, just me and DH with a nice chilled bottle of wine .... or two.

The other morning the girls came down to find two empty bottles of wine and a huge empty pizza box in the lounge - "Oh mummy did you have friends round last night - who came". I was too embarrassed to admit to my 3 year old that it was actually just their greedy parents.

KateandtheGirls · 11/05/2004 14:45

More often than not I'll have at least one drink on a weeknight, and I'm on my own. I don't have more than 2 or 3 at the most though. Last night I didn't have anything (which probably means that tonight I'll feel I deserve a glass of wine!).

ghengis · 11/05/2004 14:48

I agree with you s/balls. I never felt the 'need' to have a drink in the evenings before kids but now feel like I really deserve it. DS is 11 and very hormonal at the mo. so if I have survived a night without WW3 breaking out I 'reward' myself with red wine. I try not to drink 7 nights a week and never open the bar before 7pm but I am not happy with my level of drinking and need to do something about it.

ponygirl · 11/05/2004 14:55

Well this thread is eroding my good intentions! Absolutely love drinking (wine usually) and until last week was drinking every day (equivalent of a couple of glasses of wine, more at weekends). It was that 5.30, dinner's on, bedtime is nearly here, I need a drink feeling. But have decided to try and be more healthy and eat better and drink less during the week, so last week didn't drink at all til the weekend. Reading this is making want to give up, (not drinking that is) - thank god I'm going round to a friend's house tonight, clutching a bottle of wine!

sandyballs · 11/05/2004 15:04

Ghengis - I remember a previous thread of yours, a long time ago about drinking, which I could relate to. I also try to have a couple of drink free nights a week, but I also feel I somehow "deserve" it after a day with two stroppy three year olds.

I get a lot more done in the evenings if I'm not drinking wine, far more organised and I sleep a lot better. Managed to abstain last night, even though DH had a couple of beers .... fingers crossed for tonight.

JJ · 11/05/2004 15:09

For anyone who is looking for an excuse to drink tonight, it's my birthday and you can join me in having champagne and g&ts.

But otherwise, I've really got to cut back, also.

ghengis · 11/05/2004 15:09

Oh yes, I love waking up in the morning feeling clear-headed and virtuous which is the main reason I try very hard to abstain at least 2 evenings a week. But I'm not always succesful and I have to make sure I only have 1 bottle of wine in the house at the weekend or I can down a bottle and a half very easily. Interestingly, I have a full drinks cupboard of spirits and champagne which I never touch!
