Sorry ... computer virus question

My neighbour has just come over to ask me what he should do about his computer. Apparently he doesn't have any anti-virus software and is getting a message up when he connects to the nternet telling him he has 60seconds before disconnection. I'm pretty sure that I've heard about a virus that does this, but how can I help him to get rid of it?
Thanks!
Goosey

Do a search for the sasser worm virus and there is a manual way of getting rid of it. He should be able to get on line long enough to do a proper virus check. Trend micro do a free virus check. Symantec also has a program that you can download to get rid of the sasser worm virus, you could download it for him and then he could run it on his computer. HTH.

Go to Macafee.com and there is usually patches for latest patches you can download, there maybe something you can run on the site to tell you what virus it is (if he canstay connected long enuf)
If not, he will have to go out and buy some antivirus software

or try this site

sorry, patches for the latest viruses

My second post is a free site too

He needs to get antivirus protection - AVG do a free one (www.grisoft.com)

It sounds like he has sasser or blaster virus. Do a search on microsoft or symantec website for more information and patches.

To stay online long enough to download he will need to abort the shut down.

Start a comand prompt (click start, run, type cmd) When the command prompt appears tell him to type

shutdown -a

This will halt the process long enough for him to fix it.

Also suggest getting personal firewall.
