Hi, presuming you have windows and Microsoft photo editor (which usually comes with windows).

Open the image with Microsoft Photo Editor.
(right click on the file and select "Open with...")

In Photo Editor
Click on "Image" (one of the menus at the top)
Click on "Resize"
Change the units to "pixels"
And reduce to your hearts content.
To get a reasonable quality and small picture go for somewhere around 640x480 (or 480x640!)
Experiment with the sizes until it suits you.
Finally hit "File" and "Save As" and give it a new name, that way you keep your original, high quality, photo.
If your picture is a Bit Map (which will be a reallly big file) you can save it as a JPEG which will massively reduce the file size. I'm guessing though that you're starting out with JPEGS (usual).

This is basically the same for any picture editing software. I use Irfanview because it's free and you can resize many pictures at a time (and rename them too!). Just look for the Image and Resize features (use the "Help", that's what it's there for!)

If you use windows explorer to manage your photos (and other files) you can use the "Views" button and select "Details" to double check the file sizes.

Hope that helps!!

or just use flickr to load your pictures online and email people the link. easier than sending pictures.

grayham,
You are fantastic thank you!!! have managed to resize them BUT one more question for you computer whizzkid!!! How many pixels would be 300kb??? Or is there an easy way to work it out?? Sorry if it is a really simple question!!

The file size depends a lot on the content of the picture and how much the software can compress the file. Eg a picture of a black cat in a coal cellar can be very low in Kb because there's not much picture information there (everything is black!).
On average 1280x960 would be around 100k to 400k so that's worth trying first. If it's still too big try 800x600 or 640x480.
Good luck,
Graham
