Memory can be quite pricey. I would get 512MB to be honest, unless the price difference really doesn't make it worth it.

If it's just for web surfing / e-mail / Word though, and you're not impatient (ie. it might be a little slow), you should be fine with 256.

What are the prices like (the emac was already not the fastest beast out there).

yes 256mb probably too annoying. 512mb upgrade costs £75, so depends what the price difference is. it is a good way of speeding up an old mac
