I've just bought a car. How do I get it taxed and home?

I bought a car from ebay. It's sitting on someone's drive and is currently SORN but has an MOT. How do I get it taxed? Is there a way of getting it taxed in the short term so that I can get it home then do it properly?

get it insurede, asked for the MOt cert, then go to post office and get it taxed.

I think you jsut need to take the MOT cert and teh form showing you are the reg keeper to the nearest PO after you get tehm. That's what I've done when buying a car, then go back to collect the car.

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2006 18:35

oh yeah you need the insurance cert too.

do make sure they have the reg documentation though too.

LadyMuck · 15/11/2006 18:37

You need to take vehicle registration doc, insurance and MOT to the nearest PO which issues tax discs (not all do!).

southeastastra · 15/11/2006 18:37

when are you getting the car?

kid · 15/11/2006 18:38

You will need an insurance cover not or the policy document plus the MOT certificate then you can get it taxed.
If you were stopped by the police on the way to get it taxed (if you drove the car there) I am sure you would be let off as you could prove you were on your way to get it done.

kid · 15/11/2006 18:39

You would also need the part of the vehicle registration to comfirm you are the new owner. The PO will send that off so you get a new registration document in the post. But you can use the new owner section to get Tax, I have done it twice in the past.

southeastastra · 15/11/2006 18:39

can't the seller get a tax disc for you and you pay them extra?

Kelly1978 · 15/11/2006 18:39

I wouldn't count on that kid. The exceptions normally are only when driving it to an MOT or similar things.

we bougth a car recently from a garage and I drove it home without tax. It was insured though. Got it home and then went and got it taxed...

Spidermama · 15/11/2006 19:33

I would cece but I fear the seller may disapprove.

It's a BMW. .

(1985. Cost £150. Always read the small print.)

No fio but I'll be pimping it up big time.

Leopard skin seats would be good.

Do you relaise the road tax may be worth more than the car

Sounds fab by the way... I like the sound of the car seats. Let me know if you find any good ones at a bargain price
