Hi Megg, I live in Bricket Wood in Herts. Bricket Wood is a largeish village in between St Albans and Watford. Shops rubbish in this village but good shopping 5 mins away in Watford. St Albans is old and quaint with a good market and antiques shops as well as a limited range of high st stuff.

Schools excellent all over Watford/St Albans area.

My 4 bed house is up for sale at the moment, will post a link just to give you an idea what you can get here. Nearby village Chiswell Green is cheaper than Bricket Wood.

The nicest places, closest to Hatfield, will probably cost 500K for 4 bedrooms.

Do you need primary or secondary schools? How far is your dh willing to travel? Do you want to live in a largish town or would you settle for a village near a large town?

The reason it is so expensive is because so many people commute into London - but if your dh is in Hatfield (and I'm assuming he will drive to work..) you can look at places that are north of there and maybe not on a train line which should be a bit cheaper. Give us some more info and I'm sure we'll find you something!

london colney is nice.

IdrisTheDragon · 10/11/2006 11:35

The further north you go the further your budget goes. In our experience anyway (although have now gone across the border into Bedfordshire ).

No secondary schools in London Colney though, like the shops at Colney Fields but there is not much to the High Street. Depending on where you are, might be some traffic noise from the M25 or various dual carriageways...

Zog · 10/11/2006 11:37

Ooh, anorak, I love your dining table and chairs! Where are they from?

anorak · 10/11/2006 11:38

London Colney has nice bits. There is a commercial park with huge Sainsbury's and M& S and the usual Borders, Boots etc. A high st with various shops. Bits of it look a bit rough, whereas the end of LC where the river runs through is beautiful (but prone to flooding). A friend of mine lives there and loves it, but she doesn't use local pubs and shops much, she's the sort of person who drives everywhere and is never home. It's handy for the M25.

no no ,not luton.

misdee · 10/11/2006 11:42

whats your budget to buy, some 4 beds start at around 220k. is that too much?

IdrisTheDragon · 10/11/2006 11:42

Luton not a good idea IMO

KTeepee · 10/11/2006 11:42

I would agree with Misdee that Welwyn might be your best bit. The new houses at salisbury village development in Hatfield look nice but might be a bit "dead" around there during the day - don't know what is there at the moment for young children (eg toddler groups, preschools.)

If you wanted St Albans, the Jersey Farm area is the right side of the town for getting to Hatfield and is more affordable than other areas, nice views of the countryside in some places. The area north of Hatfield Road and east of Beechwood Avenue might also be within your budget and is nice.

misdee · 10/11/2006 11:45

theres nothing on salisbury village atm, but its going to behuge. still lots of building works.

stevenage as a possibility, but its a nightmare getting from there to hatfield at peak times, it would take dh over an hour at times to get from shephall in stevenage to hatfield town centre where he used to work.
