Potters Bar is nice and doesn't cost as much as surrounding areas and has v. good schools and is has a nice community feel. Would be very convenient for Hatfield, and also close to Barnet/Enfield way.

I have a friend who lives in Letchmore Heath in Herts. I've never been there, but understand it's a lovely place. Maybe someone can advise whether it might be worth considering?

southeastastra · 10/11/2006 14:15

letchmore heath is a tiny little village, with a pub and a duck pond, oh and george harrison's mansion

popmum · 10/11/2006 14:26

hertford or ware are only about 30 kins from hatfield and not too far from stanstead. both grat places!
lots of good sized property 4 your vbudget

Stevenage is a bit grim (i used to live there) and i suspect the schools are a bit hit and miss tbh. Very affordable New Town housing... but Old town is pretty much on par with every other expensive place in Herts.
Commute out of Stevenage can be a mare by car.

Letchmore Heath is the epitome of an idyllic hamlet.

hi - i used to live in watford and travel between hatfield and watford is not good .Now live in the best bit of Hatfield ( The Ryde)
Welwyn Village is nice
Datchworth and Knebworth are good value for money
but (sorry for those who live there) i wouldnt want to live in Stevenage or Salisbury village Hatfield (or any where else in hatfield)- as i know that there are q alot of undesireables living there. I wanted to live in Chiswell Green but have managed to get a house almost double the size for my money here - its on the edge of hatfield towards welwyn garden city and is a lovely area and very good primary school

Missdee

I live in stopsley near the airport, and it very nice everyone speaks to you when pass in the street.

Plenty of good parks, and ten minutes from harpenden.

misdee · 10/11/2006 19:52

oh the ryde is lovely. dh used to date a girl from there. the school is brilliant as well. its near hatfield house and old hatfield. also near mill green.

misdee · 10/11/2006 19:54

ocotbermum, dont you get a lot of air traffic though? and the roads are so so busy to get into the town. luton is far to built up for me.

hertford is lovely. and good link to hatfield via the A414.

octobermum · 10/11/2006 20:06

Not realy.

We can see the planes take off from our lounge. Although i have to say my mum would be more bother by planes when she lived in hemel you could hear more noise and see 10 plus planes stacked above her house.

octobermum · 10/11/2006 20:09

Sorry, i should yes road traffic is a nightmare at the moment because off all the road works.

It only takes dh about 40 mins to to junction 14 milton keynes in the morning.

misdee · 10/11/2006 20:10

oh i love milton keynes, even if it is all roundabouts.

granarybeck · 11/11/2006 16:10

Have you looked at Harpenden? Is between st albans and luton so good for airport if you need it. isno more expennsive than st albans, we are looking at the mo and have seen 4 beds for that price. There are some lovely villages just out of harpenden, which aren't great for harpenden secondary schools but ok for primary.

catsmother · 11/11/2006 16:58

Have you thought about North Herts. Straight down to Hatfield on the A1, or by train.

Hitchin is probably most expensive, though you should be ok on your budget for a 4 bed. Lots of great individual shops, character, and lots of nice restaurants.

Letchworth & Baldock are cheaper. Shops/restaurants not quite so good though there are hidden gems in both.

Royston, right on Cambs border is where I live. You would definitely get a good 4 bed on your budget here. We have a 4 bed, admittedly town house style, with study too and paid a lot less than you're proposing 2 years ago. It'd be about 25 mins on the train, 25-30 mins on A505/A1 now Baldock bypass is open, down to Hatfield. The shops here are nothing to write home about but it's only 20 mins to Cambridge (again by car or train) and there are lots of nearby villages with good restaurants/pubs.
