I need to buy a first communion gift for an 8yr old boy. Sorry for my ignorance but am not catholic and have never even been in a catholic church - so I don't have a clue. Have looked at first communion sites on the internet but most gifts appear to be for girls only. Any ideas for boys? All suggesions will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you lmb

A bible is a fairly neutral but appropriate gift. Obviously rosary beads are more of a girl thing and I cannot for the life of me thing what else I had. How about a St Christopher?

Anything that is likely to be meaningful to him for some while to come. Our dd was given (among other things) a little antique box, a lovely picture frame for her Communion photo, a pretty china cup and saucer...

Slightly more boyish suggestions might be: a framed picture, little retro things (my ds was given a 1930s compass in a leather case), binoculars, watch, even cufflinks. Or nice hardback book about something he's interested in.

It depends on the individual child, really, and how well you know him. Wouldn't worry too much about it having to be overtly religious, particularly if you aren't yourself

dh was given an electric drill for his confirmation (not first communion!). He still thinks it was the best present he's ever had!
